Realist subject matter meant scenes of peasant and working class life, the life of the city streets, cafe and popular entertainments, and an increasing frankness in the treatment of the body and sexual subjects. Such subject matter combined with the new naturalism of treatment caused shock among the predominantly upper and middleclass audiences for art. Edward Hopper was born on 22 July 1882 in Nyack New York, he is a highly private and introspective man.
Hopper employs realism and naturalism in representation, the elements are still, reserved and blandly handled. Representational of the familiar and concrete, but not realistic in the strictest scene. He wanted to recognize the elements but not concentrate on them( he basically captures the essence) Hopper focused on rural motifs and small American town scenes as well as everyday subject matter.
