The Small Arms Trade Treaty has been proposed by the United Nations, and has been signed by our Speaker of the House, Hillary Clinton. The Small Arms Treaty will regulate the illicit trade and movement of unlawfully owned weaponry to all nations and citizens. In the article, The Right to Bear Arms is a Human Right by Newt Gingrich, he argues that the Small Arms Trade Treaty is in violation of the first and second amendments; affecting people’s right to bear arms in the United States or other countries and prevent the citizens of any nation the right to defend themselves. The treaty does not prevent any citizen of any nation the ability to defend them self or take their right to bear arms away.
Gingrich (2012) argues that ”Far fewer women would be raped, far fewer children would be killed, far fewer towns would be destroyed, and far fewer dictators would survive if people everywhere on the planet had this God-given right to bear arms recognized” (para. 8). The treaty is not about the people’s right to bear arms, but to sanction trade throughout the world. The Smalls Arms Treaty will help prevent these terrible things from happening because the tyrants will not have the same ability to gain access to the weapons used to control their nations through militant fear. The sanction will make it more difficult for countries that develop the weapons to legally trade with countries who abuse military abilities.
Gingrich (2012) also argues that “Every person on the planet has the right to defend themselves from those who would oppress them, exploit them, harm them, or kill them” (para. 7). The treaty does not deny people the ability to defend themselves; it attempts to eliminate the process of trade for the individuals who do exploit, harm or attempt to kill them. Self defense is about being able to defend what you think is right, whether that is through a legal system, with your bare hands or other
