In the article, “The Media’s Image of Arabs”, Jack G.Shaheen a Lebanese American professor denounces the role of Hollywood movies in stereotyping Arabs as terrorists. Shaheen uses ethos, logos, pathos and with a structure of “cause and effect” to demonstrate how Media’s image affects thinking based on the consequences of stereotypes.
At the beginning of this text, the author describes how Americans view Arabs as monsters “Boogeyman”; who are always rich or “bombers” but never considered as innocents. Then the author describes his family and his personal experience when he mocked some bad guys, but then his mother taught him “to accept people the way they are”. Similarly, the author faces the same scene with his children when they generalized bad ideas on Arabs based on media caricatures, animations, and comic books. Furthermore, Shaheen gives an example of the movie “wanted dead or alive” to emphasize on how Hollywood movies picture Arabs as terrorists with bad intensions against the Americans; despite the fact that America is friendly with almost all of the 21 Arab Nations. Then, the author uses emotional appeal to demonstrate how stereotypes hurt innocent babies as well. He touches his audience by referring to the example about adoption; where being an Arab is considered a problem that prevents Arab kids of being adopted. At the end, the author urges TV producers, politicians, and religious leaders to take action against stereotypes that reveal false portraits of Arabs , and he calls out for Arabs rights to be treated with respect and
