This can help with relating the Odyssey to other things in that time period. It gave a lot of background both on the Odyssey and other literary works, as well as things that were happening in that era. One of the sections that was very interesting was the part explaining the Odyssey. There was a lot of similarities between the Illiad and the Odyssey. Possibly the similarities lie in the author, who is the same for both the Odyssey and the Illiad, so there might be similar character development, as the same mind wrote all of the characters.
