Asma Akhter who is the focal person of this case study lives with her 4 member’s family at Nayanpur community of Bhaluka Upazila, Mymensingh. Her husband works as seasonal day laborer. Her elder daughter a student of class five and the younger one about to be enrolled.
She started her journey with Self-Help Group (SHG), in 2012, when she joined preparatory meeting after being selected as a primary member of ‘SHG’. In the meeting, knowing the objectives of Self-Help she became interested to join in process. Afterward through selection process of group formation, she finally joined the Group as a general member.
Soon after joining, Asma started participating in the savings session and got understand the benefit of having savings culture and she found herself with good from the motivation to do so soon, which encouraged her to save regularly in every week to SHG savings account in Grameen Bank. Besides, she also participated in the basic training sessions on ‘Tailoring trade’ where one of her fellows, SHG trainer Morjina Akhter trained her.
After a successful completion, she started practicing to develop her skill on dress making at her home. Moreover, several times she visited to Korail (an urban economic Development Center) where she learnt operating modern equipments and quality stitching and cutting and achieved competency of designing and costing. As a result of working hard and giving effort with regularity she became competent on tailoring trade. Moreover she got herself in position of leadership. Asma proves herself as a very good ‘Trainer’ on ‘Tailoring’ trade and start to provide training. She provided the basic tailoring training to the members of Women Producer’s Club of Talabo community and SHG female group of Dhitpur community. From these she earned 6000/- taka in last few months.
