As its name states, it lists the rights given to the people, but what makes it significant is that it is the first document to provide tangible proof that a government acknowledges the rights of the people. The 1st Amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” It is clear that this document was written based off of the negative experiences with the British. Despite this contemporary system was not the ideal option for America. The second Amendment is the “right of the people to keep and bear arms.” This is one of those scenarios where something has been in existence too long. Although people can protect their freedom with weapons, this has no place in the modern worlds. Back in the early years of America, rifles were a necessary tool that colonists used to hunt and survive, whereas nowadays, guns just contribute to crime rates. The fourth amendment states that “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated.” This is an example of an amendment that has withstood the test of time because it protected the rights of the people. In order to establish and preserve freedom in a system of government, at its core, it must be created to provide the power to the people. This is evident when looking at the government of America. It has a federal government to deal with national matters, but the structural integrity of the state governments is still maintained so that they could still have the power to influence decisions. Similarly, the Bill of Rights gives the citizens a bulwark against tyranny. These factors of a multi-faceted government are what lead to America being one of the greatest nations in the world. Using an unconventional government system, the Framers were able to do everything the current system of that time did right, all the while avoiding what they did wrong. As a result, the “government of the people, by the people, [and] for the people,” has continued until modern day and will continue to thrive into the
