Assessment 1 Explanation for Improve counselling Skills
Improve Counselling Skills:
Assignment 1 Reflective Practice Task
Due Date:
Word Count: 1500 words (guide only)

For this assignment you need to keep a journal for the first few weeks of the module. The aim of the journal is to reflect on various aspects of professional practice, study challenges, or any other feature of counselling work or study. You do not hand in the journal.

Using the information gathered during this process you will write the practice task reflecting on your professional practice that includes three professional practice goals.

It is recommended that you make a brief entry in your journal everyday in which you record events, situations, information and your insights related to counselling. Ensure that identities are protected and the focus is ultimately on you and not on others.

Journal Writing Guidelines:

Each daily entry should cover:

the events that occurred on that day which relate, whether directly or indirectly, to your professional practice and study of counselling how you felt about these events what skills you observed that you demonstrated what skills do you think require further attention and growth the element of professional practice or study that you most struggled with on that day the element of professional practice or study that you felt most comfortable with on that day

Your Reflective Practice Task requires you to examine the following aspects of your professional development:

1. Overview of 3 events from your journal
2. Your current knowledge base (this does not necessarily have to be in the counselling field. Most of you will be tapping into volunteer experience, work experience, lived experience – like relationship / parenting, or prior study experience in which your skills are transferrable to counselling).
3. Your breadth of experience to date and what you have learned from these experiences
4. Your professional practice strengths and weaknesses
5. Your professional aspirations

6. You will

Reflective practice means thinking about and evaluating what you do and discussing any changes which could be made. This means focusing on how we interact with colleagues, service users and the environment. It means thinking about how we could have done something differently, what we did well, what we could have done better. How we can improve what you have done. It also means reflecting our own values, beliefs and experiences which shape our thoughts and ideas. This will allow us to obtain a clearer picture of your own behaviour and a better understanding of our strengths and weaknesses- so that we can learn from our own mistakes and take appropriate future actions.…

Then when you reflect again on a subsequent event, you can consider if you have improved, and what you still need to work on and this will help you to continue developing as a competent professional.…

I adapted my communication to deal with the issues presented by this person in this situation I used empathy, genuineness and unconditional positive regard to demonstrate to Jean that she had my attention and that I was concerned about her as a person I thought about the differences and similarities between counselling and supervision and became clearer about the boundaries between the two I gained confidence in dealing with a stressful situation through the application of communication skills learned and practised on my counselling skills course I developed my report writing skills through writing a reflective account of my practice following the supervision session with Jean. At the end of the supervision session Jean and I also agreed a more formal record to show main points dealt with and issues to carry forward to the next session. Parental attachment is a foundational part of human development. There are various patterns of development; each pattern affects the overall be-havior of the child. The early bond between infant and parent is crucial, though research reveals that some parents are unaware of the critical role attachment plays in infant development. Such lack of awareness causes the destabilization of the structure that creates emotional connection be-tween child and parent, which can affect the child in negative ways as she or he grows, including criminal activity, substance abuse, and gang activities. Related factors that may lead a child to engage in these activi-ties include the influence of parental alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence, and divorce, as well as child abuse and neglect. My continuing focus will demonstrate how a positive emotional influence beginning in infancy can impact the adult. The positive outcome of emotional at-tachment is manifested in outcomes such as social competency, academic achievement, spiritual fulfillment, and emotional stability.…

Before embarking upon my reflection regarding counselling, I would like to contribute a brief description of about the client. As she was working seven days, she wasn’t getting time to ventilate her feeling to anyone. Actually she came to me with complaints of stress. She was afraid to tell her mother she was contemplating nursing home care. Basically I was really focused on my micro skills rather than therapeutic skills” as they plays pivotal role in counselling skills more “I belief. When first reading the requirements of this assignment I was quite hesitant in approaching group counselling sessions as I was not aware of any in my area. A friend of mine whom I had not seen in a while told me that she was in a rehab facility for a month and was attending an outpatient programme. This was fantastic news and just the opportunity I was looking for, not only was this what I needed for my assignment but it was also an opportunity for me to support her. I asked her if it would be possible for me to go with her to one of her meetings and she was too happy to have me go with her.…
