Assignment 1: A Cultural Analysis Of Fitbits
The cultural item I chose is a Fitbit. A Fitbit comes in a variety of bands and colors each with different trackers. A Fitbit is a fitness and health tracker that is worn on the wrist all day long and it monitors everything from your daily steps taken to your heart rate. This item is for virtually anybody, but the targeted audience is more towards anyone looking to better themselves health wise. The Fitbit helps motivate users to keep pushing themselves and meet their daily goals (whatever you set in the app on a cell phone). There is also a friends version where daily step competitions can occur as well as the weeks top leaders. Some Fitbits are connected with cell phones where calls and texts will sync through the band so a user can read their messages or callers by looking at the band. The company Fitbit was founded in San Francisco, CA by James Park and Eric Friedman. It is a very user friendly wireless tracker that is suitable for all ages however, the targeted audience is more for the adults that want to monitor their exercise. Users respond to this item pretty well, a lot of people wear Fitbits and the stock price appears to be rising again. The stock price is currently up to $7.24 a share which is up 14%. It does not relate to another time period because it is very modernized and syncs wirelessly through bluetooth. What came before this item was just an average pedometer that was most likely worn attached to clothing. As far as what came after, there are rival companies like Jawbone which features much more affordable modern trackers. Most smartphones now also feature health apps similar to the Fitbit. For example, Apple’s iPhone features a health app that tracks steps, miles, flights of stairs climbed, and more. All of these components are featured in a Fitbit even though most users also have these trackers on their cell

    Today, a wristwatch is considered as much of a status symbol as a device to tell time. In an age when cell phones and digital pagers display tiny quartz clocks, the mechanical wristwatch has slowly become less of an object of function and more a piece of modern culture. Walk into the boardroom of any Fortune 500 company and you’re likely to see dozens of prestigious wristwatches, including such names as Rolex, Vacheron Constantine, Frank Muller, Jaeger-LeCoultre and even Patek Philippe. However, this was not always the case. Less than 100 years ago, no self-respecting gentleman would be caught dead wearing a wristwatch. In those days of yore, real men carried pocket watches, with a gold half-hunter being the preferred status symbol of the time—no pun intended. Wristlets, as they were called, were reserved for women, and considered more of a passing fad than a serious timepiece. In fact, they were held in such disdain that many a gentlemen were actually quoted to say they “would sooner wear a skirt as wear a wristwatch”. The established watch making community looked down on them as well. Because of their size, few believed wristlets could not be made to achieve any level of accuracy, nor could they withstand the basic rigors of human activity. Therefore, very few companies produced them in quantity, with the vast majority of those being small ladies’ models, with delicate fixed wire or chain-link bracelets. This all started to change in the nineteenth century, when soldiers discovered their usefulness during wartime situations. Pocket watches were clumsy to carry and thus difficult to operate while in combat. Therefore, soldiers fitted them into primitive “cupped” leather straps so they could be worn on the wrist, thereby freeing up their hands during battle.
