It is an additional course or activity that college students choose to participate in. Drama, chess, band cheerleading, and sports are all extracurricular activities. Why would the school pay an athlete to do something that they choose to do? It’s not mandatory to play sports. Playing sports help athletes develop a better talent. Usually when someone’s learning to play the piano they hire and instructor. When you want to learn how to swim, ride a horse, dance or even act, you pay to take classes. You are supposed to pay a tutor, a trainer, coach etc. and the athletes don’t pay for the services that are provided to them. They get free training, free tutoring after class, and even full access to the gym so they can work out when needed. These things are available to them at no cost, including a free education. Everyone is making money from these college athletes, except the athletes. Who’s to blame, the athletes who don’t fully read the contract or the NCAA? Not the NCAA, simply because they are following rules that have been set in stone may centuries ago. College students should not be paid and will not because they are receiving a free education/degree, they are students not employees, and sports is an extracurricular activity it’s not mandatory. Student athletes are amateurs. An amateur is a person who engages in a study, sport, or activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons.
