Athletic Trainers are not technically a field in leadership studies, but this interview was very beneficial to be because I want to be an Athletic Trainer at the high school level. This interview just reassured me that being an Athletic Trainer is truly what I want to do with my life. Before talking about how Ben views leadership, one has to know and understand his background and where he is coming from. Ben is originally from Mobile, Alabama and earned his undergraduate in Science in Athletic Training from the University of Alabama soon after that he obtained a Master’s of Science in Physical Education at Florida State University. Ben started as an assistant athletic trainer at Trevecca Nazarene University for seven years before accepting the job here at Oklahoma Baptist University. His weakness would be his assertiveness because his attitude is more “laid back,” but he is assertive when he needs to be. He really wants to imitate Jesus’ servant like leadership because that matches up perfectly what athletic training is. They have the amazing opportunity to put other’s needs above their very own. Ben wants to do everything for the athletes he can so that he can in turn bring glory to

“1. The position or office of a leader; 2. Capacity or ability to lead; 3. A group of leaders; [and,] 4. Guidance, direction.” At best, the descriptors are convoluted and do not provide any meaningful insight into the nature of leadership. Definitions for lead, although a bit more descriptive, still do not facilitate an understanding of leadership as a theory. Many have offered constructs and models to define leadership. Primarily these ideas have been developed and assessed in the business community. Two such theories, The Leadership Challenge (Kouzes and Posner, 2003c) and Principle-centered Leadership (Covey, 1990) offer compelling designs for leadership application. Professional educators can also benefit from knowledge of leadership theory and applications to the profession as well as the classroom.…

Leadership is a term that can sometimes be casually tossed around without understanding what it truly entails. Leadership can be viewed as the person, a particular position, the influence a leader has on others, or by observable results (Banks & Ledbetter, 2003, p. 16). More than ever before, I feel as though the term leadership is becoming a focus in Churches, schools, corporations, organizations, government sectors, clubs, and teams. Why? People desire leaders to forester change, create efficient, encourage unity, and produce excellence. Leadership is a vast and powerful word that requires sacrifice, integrity,…
