Intercultural diary:
My experience with Austrian people
After spending 5 months in Austria, I truly had the best experience of my life. It was like my life was paused and I was living in a dream for 5 months. In Linz I have met a lot of interesting people and I had really good time but if it comes to Austrian people I have mixed feelings. I had both of good and bad experience.
Most of my cultural observations arise from what is alien to me, what is unexpected, what I find surprising. I am amused, aghast and sometimes angered by things merely because they are different to anything I have experienced before, or, perhaps more accurately, they are different to how I would like things to be on particular occasions. If it comes to Austrian people at the beginning when I came to Linz I thought that Austrian people are cold, unkind, impolite and unhelpful. I thought it because before I came here a lot of people said me about it. Those people said this might have experienced such traits from Austrians, maybe even often enough to feel justified in ascribing this label to all of them but some of them said it on the grounds of stereotype. However I wanted saw it by myself.
First of all my experience with Austrian people is referent to mentors. Before I came to Linz I got information from Austrian girls who were my mentors in JKU, that they could help me in every stuff. I was really positively surprised. When I came here they greeted me and helped me find me dorm. They were very communicative and helpful; they told me every important information about JKU, live in Linz, interesting place in Linz and gave me a lot of good advices. Then they also helped me opened bank account and in every stuff referent with procedure in JKU. The student mentor program is great and highly recommends to incoming exchange students as this is a great opportunity to meet some local students and get an insider look into Linz.
