Strategically the United States was one of the most populated countries in the world. This made the United States able to mass the one of the largest armies in the nations history to take the fight to the Axis powers. President Roosevelt decided that the first threat that the United States needed to defeat was Germany. This target was chosen due to worry that Britian and the rest of Europe would be lost if the United States went after Japan before Germany. This decision placed most of the army in the European Theater of Operations and left the Marines and some of the Army to fight Japan. While the Army was attacking Fortress Europe, in the Pacific the military was involved a process called island hopping. Island hopping was the military plan to bypass the most heavily defended pacific islands for the easier targets.
