What is egoism? Something that Prometheus seems so interested in. Egoism is a doctrine that individual self worth is the motive behind all conscious action. In this day in age being an egoist is wrong, but in Prometheus society being an egoist wasn’t even heard of. Why is it that Prometheus writes down “ego” at the very end of the book on page 105 of Anthem.…
Anthem is a book of Equality, where no one is left out. A book where nobody is on their own. A lack of individuality has consequences. Being an individual can be a good thing because, creativity comes from one's mind, typically, when they're alone.…

Ever wondered what the world would be like, if we have no technology and we all acted as one? Anthem by Ayn Rand focuses on the life of the main character, Equality-72521, set in a futuristic dark age. Equality -72521 lives in a society that strips individuality. He is given a job as a Street Sweeper, but this does not feed his curious mind. Equality-72521 questions the government and his “brothers”. His curiosity leads him to thoughts about friendship, love and science. When he finds a forbidden tunnel he begins to explore and discover there at night. Two years later, Equality-72521 is brimming with more illegal thoughts when he spots another main character, Liberty-53000, an equally curious 17 year old girl. But, Equality-72521’s curiosity doesn’t end there and leads him to discover electricity. When he brings the experiment to authorities, he is sentenced to get punished. Since individuals in this society are known to be one whole, no spontaneous bursts of intelligence and creativity are allowed. In Anthem, Ayn Rand demonstrates how human nature could affect the individual, “We have made a bow and many arrows. We can kill more birds than we need for our food; we find water and fruit in the forest. At night, we choose a clearing, and we build a ring of fires around it. We sleep in the midst of that ring, and the beasts dare not attack us” (Rand 84). Based on this quote, the main character runs away from his dystopian society so that he could finally be in charge of his own life and he manages to somehow use his natural instincts in order to survive. Since he is no longer allowed back into the society that he has always lived in, he resorts to doing what he believes is right in order to survive in the forest by himself. K. Buvaneswari and Dr. B. R. Veeramani discuss human nature in Anthem by stating, “…individual persons form values of their own not in the name of society” (241). Equality 7-2521 and the Golden One present the factor of human nature in the novel by showing their own beliefs and values not induced by their society. For example, they both manage to collect food on their own instead of normally being supplied food in the City. In addition, both of the characters figured out their own virtues by realizing that they loved each other even though it was forbidden. Philip Gordon presented in his article, “Crucial discoveries, of man and nature can only be made by ‘a man of intransigent mind,’ whose theme, to be sung in Rand’s subsequent novels of ‘rational self-interest,’ is typically simplistic…” The article describes if a man is stubborn enough to go against himself or his own human nature, he could discover something within him. This is related to the novel because the main…
In the story Anthem by Ayn Rand, the main character, Equality 7-2521, displays this futuristic totalitarian government as a technologically declined government. The conditions for scientific and technological advancement came to a halt and started to decrease rapidly. In this story, Ayn Rand tried her best to describe a totalitarian future that turned their backs on technology, and how they didn’t like people who were smarter than their peers.…

In conclusion, in the novel Atonement by Ian McEwan it is only partially true that successful writers create a voice with which we can identify. I think this because the main character Briony in the novel is someone with which we cannot identify, however there are other characters with which we can. And even though this is the case the piece of writing was still very…

The essential message of Andrew Hansen’s essay, Reading Sonic Culture in Emerson’s ‘Self-Reliance’ is that our own voices are the most powerful tool we possess, and though the discovery of our self-reliance we speak out our ideas in a non-conformist way. This idea of non-conformism is the key message that Emerson expresses in ‘Self-Reliance’, which is often expressed through speech. Through my reading and understanding of both Emerson and Hansen’s essay’s, I aim to argue that the voice is a crucial element in the discovery of self-reliance; however, it is not necessarily the most important, as Emerson makes references to various ways of gaining independent thought and expression.…
