Anthem by Ayn Rand focuses on the life of the main character, Equality-72521, set in a futuristic dark age. Equality -72521 lives in a society that strips individuality. He is given a job as a Street Sweeper, but this does not feed his curious mind. Equality-72521 questions the government and his “brothers”. His curiosity leads him to thoughts about friendship,love and science. When he finds a forbidden tunnel he begins to explore and discover there at night. Two years later, Equality-72521 is brimming with more illegal thoughts when he spots another main character, Liberty-53000, an equally curious 17 year old girl. But, Equality-72521’s curiosity doesn’t end there and leads him to discover electricity. When he brings the experiment to authorities, he is sentenced to get punished. To protect himself and his discovery, he runs away from the “utopian” society to an uncharted forest. Liberty-5300 is close behind. Together they learn things about past human life and swear to fight for freedom for the people back home. …show more content…
It is the only book I have seen written in first person plural point of view. The book changes point of view in the last two chapters to first person singular. Her writing is also very primitive. Rand uses short and bare sentences. For example “ We stopped when we felt hunger. We saw birds in the tree branches, and flying from under our footsteps. We picked a stone and we sent it as an arrow at a bird. It fell before us. We made a fire, we cooked the bird, and we ate it, and no meal had ever tasted better to us” (78 Rand). But,the author's tone is nothing but bare. In the beginning of the book, the tone is extremely admissive, and Equality-72521 will not stop talking about his sins. The tone gradually changes to a more confident tone. Equality-72521 becomes more confident in himself, rejects the past and embraces self praise and
