Aztec DBQ
What would one leave behind if one were to be remembered by this said thing? The
Aztecs left behind their greatest accomplishments, and destroyed what can be seen as their weaknesses. The history of the Aztec civilization is still unclear due to many found biased sources. Some sources with Aztec bias and some others with Conquistador bias. What is known, however, is that the Aztecs were a civilization in Tenochtitlan, which is now presentday site of
Mexico City, in the years 1350 to 1519. The Aztecs were a group with about about a population of ten thousand people. They were never really friendly with other civilizations and took over some civilizations as a result of their unfriendly gestures. It’s also known that the Aztecs were a

Bullies in school are an example of this because they hurt others to make themselves feel better similarly to the Aztecs in order to establish dominance among others. Due to the dominant trait of the Aztecs, they should be seen as civilized due to the fact that they are similar to us today.
Another reason why the Aztecs should be seen as civilized when compared to us today is due to their strong beliefs in their religion. As it is mentioned in Document 5, from the
Florentine Codex
, a young seventeenyearold is experiencing his first sacrifice ritual. The document states, “...I was amazed by the physical beauty of the enemy warrior who was killed at the end of the festival. This seasoned warrior, whom we change from a human into a god…”
(Florentine Codex). The Aztec’s belief in their religion was strong enough that they felt that it was justified to sacrifice others for their gods. This is similar to what some religions practice presently where animals are the sacrifices instead of humans. Another example that exemplifies the Aztec’s practices is the image from Document 6 from the
Codex Mendoza
. It is depicted

The actions of the Aztecs when compared to what some other people are doing currently aren’t that different from each other. Furthermore, in Document 2,
The History of the Indies of New

Spain
, an Aztec priest states “...we shall find our rest, our comfort, and our grandeur. There our name will be praised and our Aztec nation made great…. Our god orders us to call this place
Tenochtitlan” (Friar Diego). The Aztec priest from this quote can be seen to have the ability to speak to his god. Today, we also continue to believe in priests many religions causing us to be not so different from the Aztecs. The Aztecs should be seen as civilized in comparison to us today due to the Aztec’s strong religious beliefs.
The Aztecs should be seen as civilized when compared to us currently because of their advancements in agriculture. According to Document 8,
Matricula de Tributos
, it is depicted that the Aztecs had an organized agricultural layout. A farmer’s house is located nearby rows of corn, squash, beans, and flowers and this goes on throughout the whole layout. The Aztecs had

Montezuma, who was the ruler of the Aztecs, had a funny feeling about them. Not too long after they arrived, the Aztecs realized that the Spanish could be killed just like their other enemies, so they went to war. They caught some of the Spanish, killed some of them, even ate some. The Spanish won out because of their preparation, and because they brought so many diseases with them, it killed some of the Aztecs as well. The Spanish came to the Aztecs land, and the Aztecs thought that this was the 'God' that they had been waiting for. They treated the Spanish with riches and lavish food, as they would a God. They only treated them to the finest of treasures because they were sure this was what they were looking for. The Spanish reported that they 'were sickened by the people's shocking routines', which was mentioning toward the sacrifice they saw. Then, when the Spanish tried to take advantage of what the Aztecs had given them, they realized they weren’t the Gods they thought they were looking for. So they cut them off. Conversely, the Spaniards had the horses, firearms, and they had most of the people of the Aztec society on their side. With that being said, the Spaniards didn’t like how the Aztec land was being run. With these people and the Spanish's knowledge expansions, they overthrew the Aztec Empire. After the Aztecs were conquered by the Spaniards, they were turned into…

Isolation, due to the fact that the Aztecs thought they were the only people alive apart from the other Indian/Mexican tribes, the Aztecs stayed in their city unaware with the world around them. While the Aztecs were staying in their island, the Spanish were exploring and trading which allowed them to develop better technology such as gunpowder. Futhermore, the Aztecs had no immunity to foreign diseases like smallpox, which killed many of them.…

The Aztec empire thrived in central Mexico from the 13th to the 16th centuries. In the early 16th century, the Spanish conquistadors overtook the Aztecs as part of the "Age of Exploration." Since then, historians have struggled to define how history should remember the Aztecs. Although the Aztecs were supporters of human sacrifice, they should be remembered as a sophisticated civilization because of their elaborate flourishing economy, social customs, and their advances in society.…

The Aztecs had city-states and were people of a stratified society. Each of one of these city-states is ruled by a speaker that is chosen by the pipiltin(the nobility). This speaker would have to sacrifice his own blood regularly to show that he is a true king and has good intentions for his empire. The nobles grew stronger with every conquest. The Aztecs also had a governing council but they weren't all that successful because they had lacked real power. The Aztec system was very successful, because it was aimed at political dominance and not head on control of the people. The calpulli had authority over the government but during the 1st hundred years the emperor took over. The Aztecs were very smart in creating "flower wars"(to leave a few territories unconquered so that periodic wars could be staged so that both sides could obtain captives for sacrifice) ,because it ensured sacrifices.…

The Aztecs were an Native Indian tribe, located in modern day Mexico, who ruled a huge part of Mexican territory from the 1400’s to the 1500’s, before they were conquered by Hernando Cortes and the Spanish conquistadors. The Aztecs had one of the most advanced civilizations in the Americas and built cities as large as any in Europe at that time. They had a very unique culture compared to the Spaniards, for example they practiced a religion that affected every part of their lives and featured human sacrificed. Their impressive empire was destroyed by the spaniards in the year 1521, but the Aztecs left a lasting mark on Mexican life and culture.…

When they arrived in Tenochtitlan, the residents were already resigned to their faith, knowing they were “about to die and perish, we are awaiting our deaths”. This reinforced the Spaniards’ perceived superiority, partly stemming from the esteem that the Mexica gave them. Tenochtitlan was known as the foundation of heaven, and the city itself was given a divine status. This inspired the Mexica to fight and defend something so great. Even the Spanish, when they first entered the city, were in awe as they gazed “on such wonderful sights, we did not know what to say, or whether what appeared before us was real,”. They compared the city of Tenochtitlan to European cities such as Venice. This was one of the first times that the Spanish saw the Mexica as civilized human beings that were similar to the Spanish and…

The Aztecs had many rituals that they performed and most of them had to do with human sacrifice and this was something unspeakable and unholy in the eyes of the Spaniards which only fueled their cause in killing them and stopping such barbaric acts. Also the Aztecs would perform rituals before declaring war which the Spaniards used to their advantage and caught them off guard with their immediate attack of Tenochtitlan. These were the most important factors that led to the eventual fall of the Aztec…
