SUSTAINABILITY IN TEXTILES
INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the principle of sustainability states that our natural environment is the driving force behind our survival. It is this principle that ensures that humans and nature can co-exist harmoniously with each other. This permits fulfillment of social, environmental and economic requirements of present and future generations. The three facets of sustainability are social, economic and environmental welfare.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important with more and more being aware of the critical and apathetic working conditions of laborers, the discharge of pollutants in the environments as well as low wages being paid to workers. Sustainability is hence, the need of the hour.
According to EPA, sustainability is a vital factor that ensures we will continue to have water to drink, resources to make our lives and a balance of the ecology and economy that will avoid wars and promote trade.
Evolution of Sustainability in India
India is one of the largest economies in the world. In terms of production and level of employment, India takes the lead amongst all other nations. Despite its growing development, rapid urbanization and economic development is an issue to ponder upon. The increasing consumption and demand for energy and natural resources, escalating emission of greenhouse gases prohibit the growth of the nation. This poses a question mark on the availability of the most desired resources for human existence- land, water and oil. Hence, sustainability in India has become an imperative measure to undertake to combat the threats the industries shall offer.
Sustainability became a key trend in the 1970s when in 1972 Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, spoke at UN Conference on Human
