This next literature I will be discussing is “Don Quixote” written by Miguel De Cervantes which has a powerful message of social classes. This story tells you a lot about social classes and how it everyone is treated differently within the classes. Don Quixote is an old man who has read a lot of books about knights and decides to be come one. He is a very weather man and is one of the smartest people in his town. He set off on a great adventure in pursuit of eternal glory and drops what everything he was doing at home. "Yes the motherfucker looks so deadly it makes me giggle and blush." (155) Weapons play an important role in war. Not only do they protect and kill, but they provide a feeling of comfort to a soldier because the soldiers are in control of their weapons. During the Gulf War in Iraq, soldiers were excited by their deadly weapons as described in the pervious quote. In the book Jarhead, a memoir by Anthony Swafford, soldiers have intense relationships with their weapons. Swafford constantly describes the many guns he carries, the process of cleaning his weapons and how they use them. Swafford's fear of dying triggers his obsession with weapons because they are the only aspect of the war he can control to stay alive. Even after the war is…

After reading the prologue and first scene in Art Spiegelman’s Maus I, it can be easy for readers to arrive at the conclusion that Vladek Spiegelman is a bit controlling, quirky, and even a bit pessimistic. As seen with his reaction to Mala’s choice to use a wire hanger to hang Artie’s coat, Vladek obviously has a specific idea as to how things should be done. If things aren’t done in the exact manner that Vladek deems fit—as seen with the conversation about using wooden hangers versus wire ones—he takes direct control in order to ensure that things are done properly. Furthermore, as seen with the scene regarding his pill-counting, Vladek is a bit quirky, as seen by his statement, “I’m an expert for this” (Spiegelman 30), implying that counting…

The Status Seekers tends to tell us as readers a lot on American social classes during the 1950’s. It showed how little by little there was starting to form big gaps in the social classes in the United States, and what exactly were the factors that were causing these gaps. Americans began to worry about the relationship between social class and economic growth. Many felt that although economic growth was beneficial for everyone as a whole, that it’d deepen the division in the social classes. This book also spoke on how the growth of prosperity caused the economy to rise and the technological growth also contributed greatly.…

In the novel Claire of the Sea Light, Edwidge Danticat utilizes Max Ardin Junior and Flore Voltaire’s interactions and relationship to reveal the dominance of wealthy males in Haitian society; however, despite these circumstances, Danticat illuminates the ability for women to empower themselves and find redemption. The consequences of Flore’s rape reflect the sexist nature of society in Haiti that knowingly traps poor and vulnerable women in harmful and violating situations at the favor of rich men. On the other hand, using Flore’s reaction to her rape, Danticat explores the opportunities women have to stand up to the detrimental male power and take their dignity back. Ultimately, the events involving both Max Jr. and Flore allow Danticat to…

In the United States today, ascribed status is extensively influential in determining one’s social class. Commonly associated with race and gender, ascribed social statuses can serve as obstacles in many individual’s lives. Schaefer (2015) stated, although Malcolm X was an alarmingly intelligent young man and graduated near the top of his class, teachers persistently discouraged him. While Malcolm dreamed of becoming a lawyer, one teacher suggested he pursue carpentry instead. At that moment, Malcolm concluded that his race prevented him from becoming a successful lawyer and achieving his dreams (pg. 107). For many minorities, as well as women, their ascribed statuses will ceaselessly penalize them. For example, for an entire year, my 6th grade…

Social class is often judged upon by the following criteria; money, possessions, and ranking. In our society today, so much of our life is focused on social ranking. There are those who actively try to climb the social ladder while there are others simply who seem to be at the highest status. In Westport, it seems that most people are privileged in some way. I’ve grown up being on the soccer team, traveling on vacations to Arizona, the Caribbean, and London, never giving much thought to social class. These activities and gifts are just part of my life. However, over the last few years, I have come to realize that there are people who do not have these privileges. That is when I began noticing different social classes.…

I see myself as a fully functioning member of society with many roles and statuses. In the social world I have many contributing factors that I will explain in more detail within the paper. My ascribed status or status attained at birth is that of a caucasian, female, daughter. These are self explanatory statuses and need no greater details. Mother, student, and Registered Medical Assistant are my achieved statuses, statuses that I have voluntarily earned. I became a Mother in the year 2000 with the birth of my daughter Emily, I was a wife for seven years but since I am no longer in that role I have not included it in my paper. Student is a status I gained earlier this year when I made the choice to return to school to get a degree in another field of study. I wanted to be able to provide more for my family. I became a Registered Medical Assistant in 2010 after going back to school the first time. It was sadly the same time that the economy started to fall and I was unable to find a job in that field. I do, however, keep my credentials up by completing continuing education since I put all the work in to achieve that status. There are also the master statuses to mention. These are statuses that have special importance since they pertain to my identity and overshadows all the other statuses. They can shape a persons life and can be either…

Most people will say that the world needs status because it makes lazy individuals strive to get to the “top” just like Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart. In this story, by Chinua Achebe, a man named Okonkwo who lives his life without emotions so that everyone in his village views him as manley. He is often very aggressive in the story and takes titles and ranks very seriously so that he doesn't end up like his father, who was poor and had no title. The village in the book has many different types of status that people can gain; these goals that the people have, creates a negative atmosphere in the book which then causes a lot of problems within the story and within our world as well. So if this method has been around for a while, then why don't we put a stop to it and instead implement a system that builds positivity.…

Social and financial status play a big role in our environment today. The wealthy tend to get more recognition for having more money and the lower class tend to get a bad reputation of being uneducated people who have no rights as citizens. Social status in a large town relates to how well people treat a person and see them as they represent themselves throughout the community. In the book Great Expectations, Charles Dickens explains wealth and popularity in the 1800 's as a key factor of life. He allows the reader to see how important it is to be in the upper class, but he also makes the reader realize that whether being wealthy or poor that certain person is always judged in their life and sometimes being judged can ruin who they really are inside.…
