After reading the prologue and first scene in Art Spiegelman’s Maus I, it can be easy for readers to arrive at the conclusion that Vladek Spiegelman is a bit controlling, quirky, and even a bit pessimistic. As seen with his reaction to Mala’s choice to use a wire hanger to hang Artie’s coat, Vladek obviously has a specific idea as to how things should be done.
