quality education and these barriers are stopping the United States from having the most dominant and substantial public school system in the world. In Waiting for “Superman”, Geoffrey Canada says it took five years to become a “master teacher.” Many different studies suggest that teachers become more acclimated to the school system after three or more years. But many teachers leave, especially teachers in communities that have low-income students. Also teachers leave because of low pay. Maria Regalado says she is “stuck” because of where she lives and applies for the lottery in a school an hour away so her son Francisco will get a better education. In the United States, 15.1 percent of families and people are faced poverty. Poverty is a big deal in the United States and can really affect the way children learn because of the lack of funds. Public schools funds range from as low as $5,100 to as high of approximately $20,300, and that is just not enough to keep a substantial and working school. Francisco’s mom said that she had a public teacher who said, “I’ll still get paid if I don’t teach.” People that work in public schools receive this tenure, which pretty much means if a teacher can stay in one school and do a well enough job in that certain school, they get the job for life. But some of the teachers after they receive this tenure don’t even teach anymore because they are guaranteed pay. We can definitely break these barriers but we need every leader and person to step it up and try their best to make changes. We can improve these problems by finding great leaders in the Education department from the US, state, and local government. Also cutting down the dropout rate and starting children with their education earlier. “Think about if 60,000 have gone to this school in 4 years, 40,000 didn’t graduate.” Having said this, only 23 percent of kids actually graduated. I believe we can improve this by cutting down the dropout rate and starting kids earlier with their education. If we want to accomplish this we need to make preschool a requirement, because it is up to the parent if they want to send their child to preschool. The parents also need to take a stand, help your child learn and help your child be prepared for the challenges ahead. The parents can also help fix the dropout rate by caring and supporting their child. Guide your children teach them what is right from what is wrong. “You wake up every morning and you know that your kid is getting a really crappy education right now.” Our government needs to be able to invest in our schools. We need to invest in all schools equally, which means all schools should receive the same amount of money. Also we need all leaders to take a stand, school comes first. The leaders need to take care of schools, because that can really determine a person’s future. Leaders of the Education Department need to form a new system that will ensure that every student is treated the same and that every teacher is actually teaching. If we imply all these aspects of our public school systems, I believe that the public school system in the United States will be better than ever. The responsibility lies on all of us, the US Gov’t, State, local, school administration/teachers, parents, and students.
“It takes a lot of outrage and a lot of good examples to say, yes we can do this.” I believe responsibility is kind of like a pyramid. There is no certain order in the pyramid, because I believe all of us have to do our fair share of work. We all have to do our fair share of work to fix the education system but if we don’t all pitch in, it won’t happen. Having said this, no one can slack off, every single one of us, from the US government, State, local, school administration/teachers, parents, and students. We need to be dedicated and also we need to believe that it is possible to fix the education system. “I want my kids to have better then what I had.” This kid named Anthony believed in himself. Anthony was attending a public school in a community that was faced with poverty and he was living with his grandma. He knew if he put in the work, he can make a change, not just for himself, but for his whole family too. Being responsible isn’t always easy, but being responsible can lead to great
things. Stopping us from having the best education system are the barriers for ensuring that children receive a high quality education. We can improve and fix these barriers by finding great leaders. Lastly we need all of us, including the US Gov’t, State, local, school administration, teachers, parents, and students to take responsibility and take a stand. Our school system may never be perfect, but we can improve the system and make it more suitable for everyone. God has a plan for all of us, but in order to fulfill his plan for us we need to be able to work hard, strive and be dedicated, whether in school or out of school. Also we need to be responsible and believe. If we do these things everything will turn out for the best in the present and in the future.
