1. A. What do you believe is the main argument presented in this documentary? B. Describe how at least one of the children’s personal stories illustrates his argument.
After watching this documentary I believe that the main argument is that our public school systems are failing. A great example from the documentary is Francisco. He is in a public school and his teacher told his mother he is at risk for repeated the grade because he can not read. But his mother strongly disagrees because she takes him to reading classes and the community college. Francisco’s reading teacher tells his mother he is on level. His mother tries to contact his teacher but receives no response. Francisco’s reading teacher told his mother to go above the teacher and go to the school district. I used this as an example because it is the teacher that does not care which is making the student fail because he isn’t getting the help he supposable needs.
2. A. Consider how the director uses special effects, distance from the subject, camera angles and point of view to persuade his audience of his message. B. Do the special effects, camera angles, the director’s point of view etc. contribute to emotional or ethical appeals in this documentary?
The director uses special effects to persuade his audience his message by using distance from the subject. He displays this when he is interviewing teachers is it a close up on the teacher to show that what they have to say is important. He also uses point of view, by having the camera outside the scene creating an objective effect. I believe the special effect contribute to an emotional appeal in this documentary because it is real life stories. The happy and sad moments are all captured to show it is not an easy life for these children.

    One of the main factors that contribute to the drop out rates is the lack of support. There should be more prevention programs in place at various high schools and locations with high poverty rates. Programs like this will encourage students to work harder in their studies. According to the video, many individuals who do not attend school on a normal basis end up dropping out of high school. One way the prevention program in Bronx, prevented students from dropping out by encouraging students to attend school daily. There is a serious need, of such prevention programs in schools because this clearly demonstrates the participants of the prevention program keeps them on track to graduation and in obtaining a higher education. One thing that surprised me the most was how topics like this are not ever mentioned on the news. This topic needs more media coverage. Our society needs to be aware of such problems that exist in our society. The government needs to step in and help finance schools so that they can obtain or build prevention programs like Dr. Robert Balfanz to help build a better future.     The documentary begins with a history of the zero tolerance policy. In the 1990's, most schools established guidelines in institutions in order to keep the campuses safe from weapons and drugs. However, schools would soon find themselves deciding which items are considered weapons and what is considered drugs. In today's society, even knives at lunch and ibuprofen are considered hazardous to the safety of our schools. Even kindergartners are being expelled and suspended for playing cops and robbers, using their fingers as guns, or drawing "dangerous" pictures of a man with a gun. Let me address the thought in many minds while watching this film. What 5 year old child is going to cause danger or harm to a school? That's just the issue, it seems our society cares more about safety due to illogical fears, rather than our children's education. That in itself is causing our education system to fail rapidly and increasingly. The documentary also informs us of other incidents occurring in the schools. A 3rd grade student was suspended for a kiss on the cheek, a 5th grader was expelled for bringing ibuprofen to school. Many argue that this kind of action taken by authority is a threat to the basic rights.     All through our lives teachers are an important factor in our education from the very first day we begin to learn how to walk and learn to count. In the film of “Waiting for Superman” directed by Davis Guggenheim, we are taken through the different ways that the public education system has failed students in urban schools. By interviewing reformers different ideas are brought to attention on how the public educational system can be improved. Guggenheim takes us through the lives of five different students, four of whom attend public schools, and one in a catholic school, that all attempt to leave the public school system behind. Experiencing the struggles of these students and their families, we learn how they are placed in a lottery system to be able to gain admission at a charter school. All with the same goal in common and dreams of a better education, students still have to rely solely on luck. The film later shows how four of the five students are turned away by the lottery.…

    If you had a child and lived in an undeveloped area with poor educational facilities would you not seek out the best alternatives available? Would you not go out and discover what opportunities offer the greatest chance for success and embrace every single one of them in an effort to give your child unlimited opportunities? In the film we viewed in class, we were shown unbelievable and also amazing scenarios where children and their parents were forced into similar situations as addressed above.     This program teaches kids ways to make a difference in their communities by having them engage their peers in the program as well. This is in hopes that these children will grow an interest in attending the program rather than roaming the streets where they are vulnerable to come in contact with law enforcement. Another program called The Youth Community Restoration Program was introduced in the film, which was put in place to have children perform community modifications rather than being put into juvenile hall. Also freedom schools (which I am personally familiar with) put in every city and in every state is recommended in the film as well by Crystal Mattison. Therefore, it is concluded that the video is recommending alternate programs that will work more closely with children in order to attack the root of their misbehavior. These programs will provide interventions that not only assist them with behavior, but will help them develop life skills they can carry on into the work force rather than them heading down a pathway to prison.     I think she makes some great points on how inequality and unfair practices fall most on the poor, lower class people. She cites Robert Putnam's thesis that says, "That instead of talking about inequality of wealth or income among adults, we ought to focus on inequalities in all of the ways children accumulate, or never tough opportunity." (Badger, 2015). I never realized it but it starts early. A child of parents who struggle to make ends meet on a regular basis may not get to attend day care. So when they start school, they are already behind what the children from more affluent families have been exposed to. Then when they get into school, they're not allowed to participate in extra curricular things because they may not have the money to pay for the uniform or participate in a competition. If they do get to play, they may suffer from not doing as well academically due to the No Pass, No Play rule. These kids from lower income families typically don't get help on homework, studying or projects so it's easy to see why they might fall farther behind. Without all of these experiences, entrance into college is much harder, and finding money to pay for it is even more so. So this kindergartener, that came from a one parent home, and did not attend day care may just have bricks on their head as far as how much they can grow and close their own inequality gap. So why not level the playing field for students. The government funds all kinds of programs that do not seem to help, so maybe we should provide child care and Pre-K programs to all low income students. And then we should make sure that they get the support they need academically and waive fees for school sponsored activities. Let's make things more equitable for all students and close the…
