One of the most confusing things for baseball fans is free agency. Free agency is a complicated set of rules that has been negotiated in labor agreements between owners and players for more than 30 years. In major league baseball, a free agent is a baseball player with six or more years of major league service whose contract has expired for the following season, or is an amateur player who was not drafted by a team in the annual draft. The type of baseball player is now able to enter into free agency. Once in free agency, a baseball player is in a group of other free agents, from which teams can sign players. This means that a player is free to solicit offers from other teams for new contracts.

Free agency began in 1969, when Cardinals outfielder Curt Flood was traded to Philadelphia and refused to report for work.
Curt Flood appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court,but lost the verdict. However, this case put in place an arbitration system for players' union and the owners disputes. In 1975, pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally played without contract, arguing that their contract could not be renewed if it was never signed. An arbitrator agreed, and they were declared free agents. Before this ruling however, owners were able to sign players to what was known as a reserve contract, which provided a repetitive option for the team to renew the player's contract for one more year, but did not allow the player to terminate the relationship with the team if they wanted to do so. The result of the reserve clause was abusive from the player standpoint. Baseball players felt as though they were essentially property of the team. When a player is drafted
When a player is drafted by a major league team he is bound to that team for three seasons in the minor leagues. Contracts for these players are automatically renewed on a year-to-year basis. After three years, a player must either be put on the team's 40-man roster or he is eligible for what is called the Rule 5 draft. Once he has played for three seasons and is on the 40-man roster, the team then has contract options on the player. The team can send the player to the minors and still keep the player for three additional seasons with automatic contract renewals. Each player has three option years and can be sent up and down from the minors as many times as the team sees fit to do so during this period. Now a player with three or more years of service cannot be removed from the 40-man roster without the players permission. The player can opt to be released immediately or at the end of the season. A player can also chose to become a free agent whenever the player is removed from the 40-man roster.
Rule 5 draft
After a player has completed three minor league seasons, the team that drafted the player must decide if they want to keep the player or not.
At this time the team must sign the player to a major-league contract adding the player to their official 40-man roster. Players who are not signed to the 40-man roster are eligible for the Rule 5 draft. A player can be drafted by another team for $50,000. The drafting team must keep the player on the 25-man major-league roster for the entire next season or the player can be offered back to the original team for $25,000. A player not on a 40-man roster and not taken in the Rule 5 draft remains under contract with the players current team. However, the player can chose to become a minor-league free agent instead of being taken in the Rule 5
draft.

Players clearly gained the most from free agency, but the game also improved dramatically.
Free agency rectified the injustice to players who were cheated out of money and freedom because of the reserver clause. Free agency brought hope to teams. Free agency allows teams the opportunity to improve their team by adding a different player or two who could make all the difference next season. Since the introduction of free agency, and prior to the 1994 baseball strike, 19 teams reached the World Series and 13 different teams have won it. Compared to the early days of baseball, when most of the postseason was played in New York.
