Emperor Constantine convened the first Ecumenical Council, where more than 300 bishops came from all over the Christian world to debate the Holy Trinity and establish the foundation of the Christian church. It was a very controversial and contentious meeting.
At one point, Arius (AR-ee-uhs) of Alexandria taught that Jesus was not equal to God the Father.
He therefore argued that the Trinity should not be taught. The bishops listened respectfully, but Nicholas became troubled. Rage finally overtook him and he stood up, crossed the chambers and slapped Arius across the face. The bishops were shocked and brought Nicholas before Constantine. The Emperor had a law that said it was illegal for anyone to strike a bishop.
Constantine felt the bishops should determine Nicholas’s punishment because he himself was a bishop. The bishops’ decision was to strip Nicholas of his bishop’s garments, chain him up and throw him in jail. Nicholas would not be allowed to attend the meetings, and when the council was finished, they would decide Nicholas’ fate. Nicholas was ashamed and prayed for forgiveness.
