I became an early childhood professional do to the long history of educators in my family. My belief is that education is not only the key to expanding my knowledge and it creates better opportunities to self and community…
A child with disabilities is a major focus in today’s education. Achieving my Bachelors in Special Education, I need to be aware of the need to ensure appropriate education for all children with disabilities. “The education of children with disabilities is a top national priority. Our nation’s special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), sets high standards for their achievement and guides how special help and services are made available in schools to address their individual needs (National Dissemination)”. This is my biggest challenge. I feel with the right tools and help with administration; my job will guarantee a bright future for my students with disabilities. I came across a case, Irving Independent School District v. Amber Tatro. The findings of this case gave me some insight on the statues and limitations that I as an educator have to abide by. But it also gave me hope that we the educators have the right to make such access meaningful to handicapped children.…
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with students of different ethnicities, different socio-economic backgrounds and special education. I have also worked with high school students of various sexual orientations. Working with different people has shaped my identity by becoming aware that we are all different and that is what truly makes society beautiful. It has shaped my self-awareness by connecting me with my true desire in life. That is why I extremely passionate to help children and young adolescents achieve success. My experiences have broadened my understanding of the role in social work in society because I feel one can do so much for others. I have gained enough experience, which allows me to believe that I have the flexibility and adaptability to work with different populations. My previous experience has influenced my understanding of and commitment to social justice because it is sad to witness children with a 30,000-word gap deficit come into my classroom as opposed to children from higher social economic statuses who have a larger array of vocabulary. Then as they get older we see this gap widened regardless of ethnicity based on social economic status and students who are learning English as a second language. I want all children to have the same access to an amazing…

Parents trust us teachers with their children and believe the school will take every measure to help their child succeed. Policies must be made to protect the rights of individuals with special needs. People like Patti, Luis, and Bernard are beautiful, amazing individuals. They require only patience, love, and compassion. Geraldo Rivera said “All people need is humanity and compassion”, and special education needs reform and continue to improve.…
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 states that all children with disabilities had the right to a free and appropriate education. As a teacher, it is my duty to know and understand my students and each of their needs. By law, all students with disabilities have the right to an…
In this class I have learned a lot the past couple of weeks! Something that stood out to me is the zero reject policy that is apart of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). I learned that zero reject means that schools cannot deny children education no matter what disability they have. This act also ensure that special needs children receive an education from the time they are born to 21 years of age. I chatted with some friends about what we discussed in class. I asked them this question, “if a child with special needs cost 5 times the amount of money than an average child to educate, should the school still be required to educate them?” I got a lot of different answers and had some great conversations with my friends. Then…

I am an advocate for each child I have by meeting their educational, emotional, and physical needs daily. Each child is treated as an individual. I also provide a quality educational program to all children in my care to support success for them. If a child shows signs of developmental delay I work with the family and any agencies to ensure a bright future for them.…
I would describe my personal beliefs as strongly on the interventionist side of the spectrum. The reason I feel that I am on that side of the spectrum is that I feel that social conditions are a big factor in creating barriers for people who fall outside of what is considered average. Discrimination in society plays a large part in who can participate in activities. With a proactive, student centered, open minded approach we can dismantle the barriers that are created by societal factors, thereby reestablishing equity for all. As a teacher it is our job to advocate on behalf of all our student, including those who are differently abled and those who fit mainstream…

You should never discriminate someone. You should treat all children the same. You shouldn’t consider their disability an excuse, but rather, a point of motivation. I believe everyone can help someone and not have to get anything in return. I feel like I have a few experience on children with disabilities…
With only two months left in my high school career, numerous hours have been spent trying to figure out a major life decision. What do I want to be when I grow up? After putting some serious thought into this question, I believe I have a general idea of what I want to do; become an Early Childhood Educator.…
The reason I chose special education is because I have two boys that require special education in their public school setting. I have worked very closely with the special education teachers and the director at Wewoka Public School. I have also volunteered with the Special Olympics for years. Working with special needs children is very fulfilling and rewarding. A career in this area would be one that I enjoy and one that helps me give back. The experience and knowledge I have learned over the last twelve years working with Wewoka Schools will surely get me very far in this field.…
