Becoming A Firefighter

I have always loved going outside and being physical. I like to work outside with my dad and play outside with my friends in the summer. I believe that firefighting is the perfect job for me. They save lives and get to look cool while doing it! After researching career information like, work environment, skills needed, level of education, salary and job outlook, I have found that I am highly qualified for a fire fighting or forest firefighting job in the future. To become a skilled firefighter, a college degree is not necessary. But hard work is still involved to become a firefighter. A basic firefighter needs a high school diploma and EMT (emergency medical technician) training and certification. To become a firefighter there will be strong
competition. High test scores and physically fit applicants are best prospects for this career. But higher positions will require a bachelor's degree in fire science, public administration, or something related to the job.(Occupational Outlook Handbook)
The Salary and Job outlook are important factors when decided to become a firefighter. 90% of firefighters work for local governments. They work long shifts but then are off in between for a couple days. Firefighters make on average 48,000 a year, but there is a large range of annual wage depending on the position. High test scores and physically fit people will have a good chance for a position, although of the strong competition. Employment is growing at an average rate of 5%.(Occupational Outlook Handbook)
After further research I have decided that a Career as a firefighter is a good option for me. The Benefits and Job outlook match what I am looking for in a future career. The salary is low for me but I hope to go to college and eventually hold a high position or become a forest firefighter.
