Beethoven Number 15
I chose to analyze Beethoven’s Piano Sonata number 15. Sonata number 15 is opus/work number 28. There are 4 movements in the work, but I chose to analyze the first movement. Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770 into a family of musicians ("Classical Net - Basic Repertoire List - Beethoven" pars. 1-2). Beethoven began writing music at a young age ("Classical Net - Basic Repertoire List - Beethoven" par. 4). He composed his first original Sonata in 1797 ("Classical Net - Basic Repertoire List - Beethoven" par. 8). It does not state when he performed Piano Sonata number 15, but Alexander Thayer believed that Beethoven composed this work in 1801 (298). The first movement is typically the fast movement, and the movement in this piece is no different. …show more content…
In this piece, the tempo marking is andante, which is a walking speed. So, it has a slower, leisurely tempo. The time signature is 2/4 in the second movement. The third movement is typically the dance movement known as minuet. The third movement in this piece follows this, but is not called a minuet. Beethoven tended to speed up the third movement and this is known as scherzo. The tempo is allegro vivace which is very fast. The time signature for the third movement is 3/4 which follows the normal form. The fourth movement typically returns to fast. The fourth movement in this piece follows this form. The tempo is allegro ma non troppo which means play fast but not too fast. The time signature of this movement is 6/8. The overall form of the sonata follows the basic form given for the first movement in …show more content…
I do not know if that is what Beethoven thought about as he wrote it, but it is the perfect tempo for dancing. The second theme seems hurried as if it trying to get away from someone or something. It reminds me of either a race or two men vying for one girl and arguing over her. The development sounds as if something went wrong and someone is panicking. The men both realize they like the same girl and they are not backing down. It slows down at the end of the development, like a stand-off. Each one of the men do something small to try to get the girls attention. They all begin dancing again at the beginning of the recapitulation. Throughout the recapitulation, she is dancing with one man, and then the other man steals her away. They are pulling her back and forth during the second subject. She is trying to choose and dances by herself for a little while. She chooses one of the men during the coda and they dance until the song

It is written for a five stringed cello. The Prelude of the D major prelude is the longest and grandest of the 6. It is an exuberant fast flowing introduction into D major. It is one of the only two movements Bach indicated dynamic. Bars are frequently written in repeated pairs, the first one strong, and the second one is an echo of the former one. The only other movement in the 6 cello Suites that has dynamic markings is the Sarabande in D minor. The Allemande is a German dance. The meter is 4/4, a calm walking dance without jumps. Courante is a French dance, was the favorite dance of King Lous XIV and he is said to have been very good at it. Allemande and Courante formed a pair, in which the Allemande is the calmer dance in 4, the courante the faster dance in 3. The Sarabande has its orgin in Spain. It is a slow majestic processional dance in ¾ or 3/2 with an accent on the 2nd beat and the first. In Suite 6 the Sarabande movement is in 3/2. All Sarabandes starts on the first beat. The Sarabande has two main accents, on beat one and on beat two and the third beat has no accent. The Gavottes are in 2/2 or 4/4 and all start with an upbeat of 2/4. The main accent is on beat one and the other accent is on beat three. Even if it is sometimes written in 4/4, the feeling is 2/2. Beat two and four have an upbeat character and no accent of their own. The micro-dynamic units are usually one bar. The first Gavotte is joyous…

This movement is very intense and strong sounding and has a single rhythmic motive that is short-short-short-long. The first theme of this movement is in C minor. Throughout this theme he shifts the motive to different pitches and instruments. The second theme is in E flat major and starts with a varied basic motive of short-short-short-long-long-long. The horns starts a new melody that is calm sounding compared to the opening of this movement. In this movement you can hear horns, some woodwind instruments and some string instruments. It was composed in the year of 1804, but due to having several other projects he had to postpone his writing. It wasn’t until about 1808 that he premiered the song along with symphony Number Sixth in which he dedicated to Prince Lobkowitz and Count Andreas Rasumovsky. The tempo of this specific song is allegro and involves four movements. The first movement of the song has a dramatic yet potent feeling to it. It made me imagine something terrible was about to happen to someone leaving me in suspense of what was about to come. When Beethoven wrote this song he had strong feeling which defiantly showed in the first movement of this…

One minute it’s upbeat “Spanish” rhythms and the next is slow and steady romantic pieces for the lovers within the drama. By the use of such musical connotations, the overall impact of the ballet is enhanced; so I would venture to say that this is utility music. I can also see the overall ballet as ternary form due to its three major sections. The first section in act one states the thematic material of a conjunct melody yet vivacious rhythmic patterns, connecting me with the carefree and in love feeling evoked. It carried a more elated structure. The second section, on the other hand, relays the contrasting theme of a darker more ambiguous tone. Then returning to the light in the final section restating that thematic material. However during act three, I also felt it had its own quick three part form. When the unwanted finance’s entrance is accompanied with the loud chromatic music and the cuts at the end of pieces causing disjunct melody are acknowledged, a contrast to the thematic material occurs. Though it does quickly returns to the blissful and contented connotation that began this section and all is well in the end. I was unsure of whether or not that was real or if at this point in time I was just searching for something to write in my notes for my…

This movement sounds like he was painting a beautiful picture. It has some kinds of romantic emotion, but Beethoven described it by a sorrowful way. Beethoven composed this movement use lots of sixteenth notes, from one part to others. The theme sixteenth notes were formed by A.F.E.D. This movement was totally different with the second movement, and makes a confrontation with the first movement. This also can give expression to Beethoven have a firm belief in the struggle for victory. However, this movement comes to an abrupt end. This makes people to reverie. There are still having hardships in the endeavor. Like the end of the Shakespeare’s Tempest, the protagonist subdued his foes. However, he let the past be forgotten, and forgave all of his foes. This also gave expression to the helpless of can’t triumph over the societal forces and limitations. This explained the ending of Beethoven’s tempest sonata and Shakespeare’s Tempest has some relevance.…

The music for this section of the first dance was slow mellow jazz trumpet like sounds. I noticed that the dancers moved all around the sage and their spacing between each other was close. It seemed like they were on top of each other. The tempo of the beat was slow and the duet emphasized the movement of the legs they also had a smooth fluid energy. There was no stillness in this dance.…

In contrast with the first few pieces, this was more traditional in that a very pleasant and soothing ballet piece. But the interesting part about this piece is that the song isn’t a typical music you would do a ballet dance to. The music tells a story while the dancer is creating movements that complement the music. Although the dance itself was very powerful and unique, the music did not always match the movements. There were some point where the song sped up and so did the dancers but others points where it was not sync at all. But, that the thing about dance, it doesn’t necessarily have to go with a certain beat or…

9 No.1 in G Major by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) who was one of the most famous composers in music history. This piece was composed in 1798-1799 and published in 1799 in Vienna, consisting of four movements: Adagio – Allegro con brio, Adagio ma non tanto and cantabile, Scherzo: Allegro, and Presto. This piece started with an Adagio movement in order to build tension and call to attention, followed by Allegro con brio. The first movement was described in a sonata form, consisting of three main sections: the exposition, the development, and the recapitulation. The tempo became rapid as the first movement reached its ends. After the first movement, there was a pause so that I could recognize that the first movement ended. The second movement, Adagio ma non tanto and cantabile, started softly with lyrical violin performance. The second movement was mainly led by the violin with a beautiful melody in support of the viola and cello. The pace and mood did not change a lot during the second movement. Therefore, I was not interested in this movement, since there was no high pitch sounds and no climax. The mood in the second movement was changed in the third movement. Like many of Beethoven’s compositions, the third movement in this piece was a Scherzo which generates energy and rhythmic drive (Kamien). When the last movement was started, I was awestruck by the techniques of the performers. As presto means, the tempo was very fast, but the…

Opus 13 has different tempos. I can hear three arrangements, the first being really slow and elusive, then slowly picking up to adagio cantabile, while still slow there is a singing pace, and then picking up into a quick and rapid period. The sonata was created to bring emotions of grief or sorrow, and you can tell when the song is so slow and elegant, this is the sorrow, and during the quick pace, I think this would represent rushing of emotions and anger. I enjoyed listening to this piece, I like the way it flows in and out of these states of emotion.…
