Begin Again by Taylor Swift: Hope and Despair
CCA Unit 1
HOPE
I chose the song, "Begin Again" by Taylor Swift to represent this unit's theme; hope and despair.
Hope is present in this song starting from the title "Begin Again," this tells me that we all are faced with difficult situations and we'd all enjoy the sweet opportunity to undo the past events and start from scratch again. I enjoy this title because I can relate back to this title several times throughout my life and probably in the near future. Hope can be found in these "restarting, shaking off the past and moving on situations" by giving us another attempt at life again.
A snippet from the lyrics in the first line "took a deep breath in the mirror," immediately tells us that we can always feel our expectation to desire a new or certain thing to happen. It gives us a time to breath and hope for a better day to come.
Another quote from the song," Walked in expecting you'd be late, but you got here early and you stand and wave, I walk to you, you pull my chair out and help me in, and you don't know how nice that is" this shows us how little things that people may do for us are so important and appreciated. It's also very sweet to have something normal to become something new.
My favorite quote from the song "But on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again," represents God's actions to allow us to try to be as happy and hopeful as we can be. He helps us to forget the past and look forward and live every moment we have to the fullest with the one who loves us back as much as we love them. One smile, one kind gesture and a new beginning can change our lives and can leave us enchanted. I can relate to this when you have that truly magical moment when you're talking to the guy you think will be the last, and letting go of what has past as you speak.
DESPAIR
Despair plays a few roles in this song, signifying comparison and depression. As displayed in the lyrics "He didn't like it when I wore high heels, but I do" explains to me that some of

“It is a sin to write this.” begins the story of Anthem. By the end of the story, Equality 7-2521 has a different moral assessment of his actions, but was the eventual assessment of his actions correct? His eventual evaluation being that of seeing this as a breaking of bonds with collectivity, an achievable freedom and disregard of the Council. In all terms, this judgment is correct, indifferent to the few flaws it may have. This can be proven through evidence from the book.…

This song makes you think so much about what goes on in this world. On December 14, 2012 in Sandy Hook, CT 20 children were fatally shot. The first verse questions all the actions of society “Is there a god? Is there a god? Is he watching? Is she watching? Are they watching now? If not, what are we doing? Where are we going? What are we doing now?” (Miguel 2012) But it also says if not. If not, what are we doing the song goes on to say that we need to do better as our selves. (Miguel…

This song can relate to Truman and the Truman show. I know this because many people from the outside world hope that Truman will try his best to escape the dome and find his way to the real world. Those who want him to escape feel like Christof is being unfair to Truman, so they attempt to stop him, but unfortunately they learn that only Truman can save himself. Hope is what inspires Truman to continue on through his journey.…

Hope is the little flame inside you, that comes out only when it’s dark. It’s telling you to hold on, to stay strong, and to never give up. Because that’s what hope does. It makes us believe that nothing’s impossible, that we will overcome, and it’s what makes us survivors. It’s always there, but you only see it if you believe it. Sometimes, people that have been through so much and have lost so much already, start to lose hope. For example, POWs. For them, it’s waking up every day and asking themselves, “Am I still alive?” knowing that they are, but wishing that they weren’t. That’s what…

This song was released in the 90’s. Initially this song was created with the thought of honoring all friends and family lost during life’s journey. I believe it was also partially inspired by the AIDs epidemic that was prevalent at the time. I think when dealing with death, this is a good song to help reassure us that we might not have been able to do and say all the things we wished we had before the passing of a loved one, but someday we’ll all be in the same place and eventually, hopefully, see each other…

Nobody’s Perfect by Hannah Montana expresses the topic of striving. Striving is when someone makes great efforts to achieve something. The song starts by describing how everyone fails and messes up, but the most important thing to do is learn from your mistakes and try harder. The quote “Everybody makes mistakes, everyone has those days” (Montana 1) explains that everyone makes mistakes every once in awhile and has bad days. You are not the only person who ever fails so the best thing to do is move forward.…

The seventh through ninth lines, "Trying hard to reach out, but when I tried to speak out, felt like no one could hear me." relates to me because I was never the outgoing type. Instead, I was very quiet and kept to myself. The following four lines, "wanted to belong here, but something felt so wrong here. So I'd pray. (I would pray) I could break away." have the most meaning to me now. When I first moved to Chesterfield, I felt so out of place. Now, three years later, I still like this is not the place I belong. The chorus to this song relates to what I really want I truly want to do as soon as possible. "I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly, I'll do it take ‘till I touch the sky." I'll go anywhere that feels right and "I'll make a wish. Take a chance. Make a change, and break away" and get away from the world I'm in now. When I go off and find that place where I belong, it will be a place described by the lines "out of the darkness and into the sun. But I won't forget all the ones that I love." because I believe it means I'm coming out of my mom's…
