Being Prejudice Or Discriminating Others

Being prejudice and discriminating others are two important ideas of social interactions among people. Prejudice is defined as holding an unsupportive and often negative stereotyped attitude about the members of a particular social group, whereas discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things. Basically, prejudice is the attitude at which someone holds and discrimination is the behavior that a person displays. Prejudice and discrimination can include, sexism, racism, being prejudice of other religious groups, or discriminating others on their sexual orientation. Sadly, being prejudice towards someone usually depends on if they are in the “in-group” or if someone is in the “out-group”. The in-group refers to people that belong in a particular group in which they identify with, whereas the out-group is everyone else. The out-group is the ones that are more commonly victims of discrimination. For example, if gay male (out-group) is in a highly populated area of straight men or a very religious group of people (in-group), the young gay male may experience people being prejudice or discriminating him on his sexual orientation.
The first thing to eliminate being prejudice and discriminating others begins with educating people on people and things that are different from themselves; they must be open-minded. Another way to overcoming prejudice is by placing yourself around people that may be different from you in a lot of ways, but you are experience the same things. This is known as intergroup contact and a college setting is a great place for this to occur.
