Ben And Jerry's Ice Cream Mission Statement
“We strive to make the best possible ice cream in the best possible way,” is the mission statement for widely known, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The founders, Ben Cohan and Jerry Greenfield, began with a five dollar class and now they are currently the fifth top selling brand and known around the world. It all started in March of 1951 in one hospital where two future entrepreneurs would emerge. Jerry Greenfield was born on March 14, 1951. Some may call it just a coincidence, while others may call it fate, but four days later Ben Cohan was born on March 18, 1951. Ben and Jerry both being born and growing up in Brooklyn, New York didn’t meet until seventh grade at Merrick Avenue Junior High School. After that they attended the same high school, Calhoun High School, until they parted ways for college. Ben studied at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York for two years before dropping out and switching to Skidmore College until 1974. Neither one had any knowledge of how to set up this business they took a five dollar course offered by Pennsylvania State University. Ben and Jerry both passed the class with A’s and took twelve thousand dollars to open their first shop. On May 5, 1978, at the ages of twenty-seven, Ben & Jerry’s was officially opened in a restored gas station located in Burlington, Vermont. Jerry was in charge of developing the flavors and making the ice cream compared to Ben who was the taste tester and handled the business side of it all. The twelve originating flavors were a favorable outcome leading to a growing demand of ice cream. To meet this demand, Ben and Jerry began delivering in their vehicles to be sold in grocery stores. With a $12.000 ($4.000 were borrowed) investment, Ben and Jerry opened their first homemade ice-cream scoop shop. Each year the company celebrates its anniversary by having a free cone day. At this time there was a 120% increase compared to the previous year. In 1985, the facility plant is build in Waterbury, Vermont. Together with the facility plant, the foundation is established where it provides 7.5% of the company's annual pre-tax profits. The first environmental actions begins here. Finally, in 1988 the company’s 3-part mission statement is introduced; the product, social and economical mission (History). The social mission statement is “To operate the company in a way that actively recognizes the role that business plays in society by initiating innovative ways to improve the quality of life locally, nationally and internationally”. The product mission is “to make, sell and distribute the finest quality all natural ice cream and euphoric concoctions with a continued commitment to incorporating wholesome, natural ingredients and promoting business practices that respect the Earth and the Environment”. The Economic mission is “to operate the company on a sustainable financial basis of profitable growth, increasing value for our stakeholders and expanding opportunities for development and career growth for our employees”.     Jerry Greenfield and Ben Cohen where both born in New York in 1951. On Merrick, Long Island Jerry and Ben first met one another in junior high school.
