William Harrison served as the 9th president of the United States, but later died of pneumonia in 1841. Benjamin married Caroline Scott they both had 3 children named Russell,Mary and Elizabeth. He also attended Miami University. He moved to Indianapolis to study law and later campaigned for the republican party. Over the times young lady named Jane Addams was the co founder of the hull house which supported the poor. He was known as The human iceberg because of his stiff personality.
The election in 1888 republicans tried to find a way back into the white house because President Cleveland had offended so many of his candidates of the election.
James G. Blaine was an unsuccessful candidate of 1884 he did not want to run again. Benjamin Harrison who was a senator from the state Indiana and the grandson of the hero of Tippecanoe (a fight) became one of the candidates with his record in the civil war; his (quality of being liked by other soldiers) among union soldiers earned him votes if the states Indiana and Ohio. He had many of intelligent thinking of his chance of winning the election; he was a (war between groups that all live in one country) soldier with a good record and the fact is that Grover Cleveland had made many enemies during his time in office. The election was a tough one Grover Cleveland won 5,534,488 popular and Benjamin Harrison won 5,444,892 popular votes. The electoral votes which Benjamin won 65 more than Cleveland he had enough to win the race. The election of 1888 did not feature any other same evil and violent (series of actions to reach a goal) disagreements between things as election of 1876 . Grover Cleveland had stood against a political machine which might have been responsible for Cleveland losing New York votes. The election ended it was carefully thought about/believed fair and legal. Successfully winning 36 more votes from New York; Grover Cleveland beating by a margin of popular votes less than 1% those 36 votes Benjamin won would have equaled the 72 votes not knowing Grover Cleveland would have won the election. As it came close in the as he did in the electoral race Grover Cleveland would have won if it hadn't been for the electoral votes losing him by a long shot. Over all the election was a success Benjamin Harrison became the 23rd president of the United States. When he entered the White House he was facing domestic foreign policy issues(which deals with the nation and government). Two more things that were
completed during Benjamin Harrison presidential term; the first involves National Parks that we know and enjoy today. Harrison first used the creation of such places as Casa Grande (AZ), Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks (CA), and Sitka National Historical Park (AK). Though Teddy Roosevelt (26th President) is known for his work with protected lands and parks, his success can be traced to Harrison's efforts.Harrison pushed international cooperation to help the US recover and focused on two areas. First, pirates and other criminals threatened shipping routes, so Harrison built up the US Navy into a fleet of mighty fight ships for protection and to send a message. Second, he supported the 1890 McKinley Tax/import tax Act, a law that heavily taxed imports from other countries and made the US a big amount of money.
The Sherman (related to preventing one company from becoming too powerful) Act 1890, the purpose of the act was to destroy (companies with too much power) that were using their power to harm (community of people/all good people in the world); and (one company that controls too much) is someone that has total control over a clearly stated/particular company). In the 1800s there were a many amount of businesses growing in the United States. The U.S was making people pay for products (that are bought and sold) or services they gave/given at high price that put pressure on people because some people didn't have the money to pay for everything other people have. The congress passed the act in 1890 it was the first to be passed. The Act had to go through so much. The Act passed the Senate by a vote of 51-1 on April 8, 1890, and the House by an (every single person agrees) vote of 242-0 on June 20, 1890. The Act provided the government institute proceedings against trusts in order to dissolve them. The Act was the relief to some people cause big owners with larger and outstanding companies be trying to buy out their competition to higher their profits. Monopolies were a big problem in the 1800s they buy a company and think the company they have now isn’t selling as quite as what needed to be sold so they force the unwealthy to sell their company. Soon as they make money off that person company they don’t even split the differences with the person they bought the company from. During President Harrison's time only eight corporations were accused of not obeying the new law (The Sherman Antitrust Act) but only one of the eight were accused guilty (The Whiskey Trust). The court dismissed the case because the government failed to comply to the situation. Suffering from tariff issues he always find a way for the least fortunate to have what they didn't have at first.
Hull House was the settlement house co-founded by Jane Addams in 1889. The Hull House attracted male and female basically (related to Europe) people (who enter a country). It was basically like school or a place where they held their meetings. The house held over 2,000 people every week. The hull house provide education to those who couldn't afford to in the Chicago. Ellen Starr and Jane Addams was the people (who start companies) of hull house; they were given great ideas from visiting Toynbee Hall in london. They moved into the house on September 18,1889 were they invited people to come and live in there. The hull house was just a house to other people who really didn't care about the poor. Hull house was providing free education, a nursery, a play area and gym. Over the years, Hull House attracted some of the brightest women in the country as residents. In addition to Addams and Starr, Florence Kelley, Julia Lathrop, Alice Hamilton, and Sophonisba Breckinridge all was apart of the hull house in some way they all wanted to help out the poor by providing to their needs. The neighborhood around Hull House was a study by residents of the helped. The house also worked on trouble people;social reform including youth-related court’s, issues, women rights, public health and safety. Ellen Starr wasn't very active in the house time went on and on till it was time for her to stop after she got paralyzed in 1929. Alice Hamilton was a doctor who taught at the Women's Medical School of Northwestern University while living at Hull House she was very helpful with many areas in the house to help and aid to helpless people. Edith Abbott and Frances Perkins was a big help in child labor and social reform they was against it all. The Hull house still stand today in Chicago people can come and visit if they want it’s been turned into a museum. In the 1800s it was a disaster because after the war people lost their jobs, homes or even families the house was like a second home to people because it allowed them to live a second chance at life get the education they didn’t receive. The education that was being provided was free teachers ( professors) came to help teach them how to read or write. Some of the people who worked there also helped the women in nursery or basic care.
Jane was born on September 06,1860 in Cedarville Illinois, she was one of the founders of the Hull house which was founded in Chicago. She lived in the house for the rest of her life by helping other people get the education they deserve. During her early life she was known for her work as a social reformer during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Her father John H. Addams was a politician and businessman from U.S. State of Illinois. She stated that ‘her father was her reason for civic involvement in moral concerns of life’. Before she found the hull house she was struggling to find her place in the world;she was battling health problems at a young age. Graduating from Rockford Female Seminary in Illinois in 1881 she traveled to go attend medical school. During one trip with her friend Ellen Starr they went to go visit Toynbee Hall in London,England. Toynbee Hall is a place where they help the poor who could barely afford a good education. Jane made the house as it was like to a group home for bad kids; the younger kids could go to kindergarten, a playground where they can play or a gymnasium. In 1890, Julia Lathrop joined the program along with Jane and Ellen they all been students at Rockford Female Seminary togethers in the 1880s. Jane accomplished many things; the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as well as the American Civil Liberties Union. Although, Jane was born into the wealth and privilege she still helped out the less fortunate. She was remembered for promoting peace, civil rights and taking a stand in women rights to vote. Her childhood in Illinois she experienced a lot of things her father was a conductor for the underground railroad which was the exact railroad that freed runaway slaves. He also knew Abraham Lincoln which was one of the president who was against slavery. Her dad did not want her to move away from home after losing his first wife he insisted that Jane enroll into Rockford Female Seminary which her older sisters attended she didn’t have no other choice but to obey her father. Addams was shocked by the poverty she witnessed in the bad side of European cities she had to do some about it. Jane had to do some about it she came up with the idea with Ellen when they went on the trip. Looking at an abandoned house gave them ideas in the quickest second (The Hull House) which they both lived during the time period
