Living in Canada has cut the ties of the extended family to some extend and I attend more to the needs of my family. The way my family functions is that of a traditional one (typical for Greek, Italian, Albanian) where the father is the head of the family and the mother is its heart. We have clear roles in the family even when it comes to domestic work which helps a lot in terms of relationships. Back home I was the one chopping wood and most of the time would do the shopping. Multicultural counseling/therapy utilizes all aspects of the client’s race, ethnicity, and culture in order to individualize treatments specific to each client. The traditional practice of counseling concentrates on assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease or issue. Traditionally, the role of counselor or therapist would remain impartial and inert to the client. In the mini-lecture by Dr. Sue stresses, “MCT can be defined as both a helping role and process that uses modalities and defines goals, consistent with the life experiences and cultural values of clients.”…

Multiculturalism and diversity is increasing throughout the United States. I reside in the state of California, which is becoming increasingly diverse. As a counselor it will be important for me to focus on cultural competence in order to be more effective in working with diverse clients. It is important that I am self-aware in how I interact with diverse clients as well as an understanding of my own biases, and stereotypes. A tool that can be effective when dealing with multicultural clients is to acknowledge their differences, culture and experiences during the counseling…

That is just what we did, through interviewing three people who were raised in cultures different from ours. The following are results from what we learned about different cultural dimensions.…
