How things are done, now do not even compare to how they used to be done. This book is from, 1941. Times have changed since then, but there are certain parts of the world it is still similar. The first example is when Lina’s mother had to give up weddings gifts in order to get something, “Weddings gifts,” she said, holding the silver, “from my parents.” Mother offered one piece to the grouchy woman in exchange for mailing letters” (Sepetys 167). This would never happen nowadays. If I walked into a store and handed them a necklace, they would look at me like I was crazy. There are multiple occasions in this book where they use different pieces of jewelry helping them survive. Another situation in the story is, in my opinion, compared to slaves. They would give them little to nothing in order for them to work. It is absolutely disgusting to read. Lina mentioned, “They gave us an extra ration at one point because they wanted another barrack built before the snow came” (Sepetys 184). This immediately reminded me of the first talk we had about how African Americans are not equal to Whites. This is the same situation, they were forced to work in the cold winter nights, while others are asleep in the train. These examples definitely allow me to believe times have changed, and are a lot different than they used to
