In sports, coaches need to understand the performance of individual players. By utilizing Big data, they will be able to identify the potential players who should be incorporated into their team. Billy Beane is the most notable example of how usefulness of Big data in identifying potential players. Beane selects potential baseball players by analyzing their abilities using a mathinfused method. Beane is able to identify the potential player by looking the players’ score and their on-base percentage. Importantly, Beane was able to reveal the shortcomings of the using the traditional statistics such as home runs and batting average to identify deserving players. His method identified great players who had been undervalued by other teams. He succeeded in putting together a winning team using a slim budget. Elsewhere, Ranadive (2014) understood the value and usefulness of big data in evaluating players. The author used Big data in two ways: maximizing the profits of the team and maximizing individual players abilities and ultimately the team’s potential. He determines the combination of players that yield the best results by analyzing the skills and abilities of individual players. He looks at how individual players rank against each other, and uses his understanding of individual player’s abilities to pair them and combine the team. He uses big data to break down identify players’ skills and to determine the shooting position that can help players to score. He also maximizes players’ productivity by using big data.
