Big Fish Hero's Journey
Stage: DEPARTURE
STEP 1. The Call to Adventure
Edward Blooms experiences the Call to Adventure when he is eighteen years old. He is the small town hero of Ashton; excelling in sports and academics. When a giant begins terrorizing the town, Edward volunteers to talk to him. During their conversation, Edward convinces the giant that they are both “too big” for the town of Ashton. The pair agree to travel to “the big city” in order for them to be in a place that better suits their ambitions. This moment changes Edward’s life forever because it is when he travels outside of Ashton that he begins his new life.
STEP 2. Refusal of the Call
Although Edward does not refuse the call, there is a point where the option is presented to him. While traveling with the giant, they come across two roads that lead out of Ashton: a new one which was paved and an older one that wasn’t. Edward decides to take the older road and promises to meet the giant on the other side. At one point, he comes across a place in the woods with a sign that warns of jumping spiders. Edwards says, “Now there comes a point when a reasonable man will swallow his pride and admit that he’s made a terrible mistake. The truth is, I was never a reasonable man”. Instead of refusing the call, Edward goes forward through the spiders and eventually makes it out of the woods.
STEP 3. Supernatural Aid
Edward’s main aid is the witch. He met the witch when he was a child after being dared by friends to approach her house. The witch shows Edward his own death in her glass eye. After seeing his death, Edward knows that he can prevail against anything up until that point. This makes him nearly invincible. He then meets the witch again while he is leaving Ashton. She says to him, “The biggest fish in the river gets that way by never being caught”. This advice sticks with Edward throughout his journeys.
STEP 4. The Crossing of the First Threshold
The first world Edward enters is the town of Specter, the “best kept

Western and nonwestern heroes come from different regions of the world; therefore, have different cultural backgrounds. More specifically, western heroes come from the Greco-Roman or Judeo-Christian traditions. Nonwestern heroes come from other parts of the world that would not associate with these traditions. While these heroes might seem to have little in common when it comes to origin, “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell demonstrates that all heroes have “similar patterns” (Campbell). However by examining the non-western hero, Mulan, in “The Ballad of Mulan” demonstrates how this figure is different than the hero outlined in Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey” in the following ways, Mulan does not have any kind of “supernatural aid”, “tests that lead to the final showdown”, or a “life-changing experience for her or many others” (Campbell).…

Throughout human history, great heroes have been created to triumph over man’s struggles. Most every culture has, in the past, told their own tales of heroes and their trials. These champions, while spread across our world and its ages, share some key characteristics with each other. This formulaic composition of heroes, while it can deviate, has stayed true since the dawn of history. This remains true with the Finnish hero god, Vainamoinen. (okay so his name has a bunch of umlauts and such but I can’t type that every time.)…
