Gator Elementary is a bilingual campus that provides services to students both in English and Spanish. In grades PreK – 4th, 50% of each grade level has classroom providing English and Spanish instruction. In 5th grade, it moves from 60/40% and in 6th it is 30%. My purpose this week was to observe translations in the 3rd grade classroom at Moss elementary with a female teacher named Ms. Bowens. As i arrive to Ms. Bowens classroom i noticed the 3rd grade students knew how to work on the math problems on their own while the teacher allows the students to talk amongst their assigned group. It is important that schools celebrate the bilingual or multilingual skills of pupils. Schools will have a policy in place which states how to ensure inclusive practice, including the additional support for pupils who need to improve their English if it is not their first language. We have a child in our class (Year 2) who is learning 2 languages that are spoken in Venezuela, where his parents are from. He is learning Spanish and Warao. We have noticed that he is finding it difficult sometimes to comprehend instructions. As teaching staff we are understanding and sympathetic to his needs as we are aware he is learning about his culture which is extremely important to his parents and his upbringing. I agree and believe that educators want students to become lifelong learners and develop critical thinking skills. I think that failure should not be feared, because from failure comes learning and through assessments learn what needs to be improved and why it failed. I work with ELL students, abed they are adults, so I have heard arguments that only a full immersion program teaches students a foreign language or English - in our case. I have also hear arguments against bilingual education in that it promotes antisocial relationships between native speakers and ESL students. There were two Caucasian students, seven African-American students, and six Mexican students. Mrs. Brodie was the teacher and Ms. Johnson was the teacher assistant. The classroom was large and there was plenty of space for the children to move about. The classroom structure was very similar to that of the 3-year-old classroom that I observed in my first field observation. There was also a carpet on the floor for circle time and the classroom was divided up into centers as well. The centers were clearly labeled. Some of the centers included reading, art, science, manipulatives, and blocks. As I stated before it was very similar to the 3-year-old classroom set-up. The classroom was filled with print and there were many different aspects of cultural references which included posters in the Spanish language and books that represented the different diversity of all of the students. The classroom was like the 3-year-old classroom amplified. This semester I observed a first grade bilingual classroom at Martin Elementary. The classroom contained three ELL’s at a variety of levels. The instructor, Mrs. Guerrero, used lots of sheltered instruction strategies not only during the set time for bilingual instruction, but throughout the rest of the content areas. Throughout the semester, I saw how Mrs. Guerrero used specific strategies to teach vocabulary to her LEP students. The first thing I noticed was how she had seated them near native English speakers. This was so they would be able to interact with native English speakers, listen to how they pronounce and use words, and also so they could help him out when he needed it. I strongly believe that communicating with colleagues and parents is the key towards student success and leading a school. I have had the opportunity to share and collaborate with teachers, parents, and the community I’ve worked in. I’ve held presentations that have provided parents with information of what our children need to master at every grade level. By doing so, I have been invited to conferences to provide others with information on Bilingual Programs and to share my ideas of Dual-Language programs in forums with other fellow educators across the state. Two Spanish educators, and an assigned substitute had thrown the towel in on this group of students before October’s fall semester, they deemed them a lost cause. With limited materials, and a lack of administrative support, I too was expected to be the fourth adult to fail them just as the system has for so long. Though I had no education or language experience, converting course with a language lab and my creatively integrating the arts made an innovative and engaging classroom, I am pleased to say I successfully completed the academic year with my Spanish 1 students with a 94% pass rate! I reflect back to this moment when I thought my place was to impact the classroom when actual development was needed in the hands of policy makers and organizational leaders. It was my first day of Winterbridge, a nationwide collaborative of thirty-six public and private high schools. Its goal is to foster a desire to learn in young, underprivileged students, while also exposing college and high-school students to teaching. It's not uncommon when faced with a monolingual, foreign language speaker to find a workplace or social service grabbing the first available bilingual employee available to serve as an interpreter. Surely, the main goal is just to get the bigger points across and anyone bilingual can do that, right? Wrong. On both counts. The point is rarely to convey only the main points and anyone bilingual can't necessarily do that. If they can't do that, then they certainly can't match the nuance and skill of a trained interpreter. Likely, if consulted most bilingual employees roped into serving as interpreters would actually confess they lack the skills and vocabulary to truly function as an interpreter.…
For my third blog entry, I had the opportunity to interview Ms. Maria, a third-grade bilingual teacher with a little over ten years of experience, and the mother of my classmate. Ms. Maria just like her students has English as her second language but began her journey at the age of seventeen. This experience allows her to be more compassionate and understanding with her students’ situations as she went through the same thing but at a later age. I personally have never been enrolled in a bilingual class so this interview was insightful to see how different my experience was compared to her students. Ortega status that “Attitudes towards the formal learning context have been shown to exert a lasting and important influence on motivation. I’m starting to finally understand Spanish and I’m able to even speak it better now!” Although Dr. Roldan came in the middle of the year Freshman as well as the Softmores have been waiting for their test grades to go up and now that Dr. Roldan is their new teacher they can guarantee they will complete this semester with satisfying grades. At first students were hesitant with Dr. Roldan but with in the first week they were already participating and enthusiastically speaking Spanish. Thanks to Dr. Roldan students aren’t afraid they won’t move on to second year Spanish. Even though students are still a little overwhelmed with the fact that they have had three teachers, Dr. Roldan is providing them with a lot of exercises to enforce their vocabulary. Jeremy Ascher ‘19, of the first year Spanish class says “I think Dr. Roldan is doing a great job considering she came in the middle of the year and I really like the way she is teaching.” Dr. Roldan will unquestionably help students in all grades excel with their Spanish vocabulary and their speaking.
