After an 8 year old global commitment to reduce biodiversity loss, Professor Chris Lee speaks at the 2010 International Biodiversity Conference. On the 25th to the 27th of October, Lee makes a speech entitled 'Taking Stock ' to an audience of leading environmental experts and leaders of respective countries. In a formal and direct style Lee contends that not enough has been achieved in the way of reducing biodiversity loss and more needs to be done to prevent further diminishment. Lee 's opening slide has the year '2010 ' with shadows of various animals, a tree and happy people holding hands as holes in the numbers. This sets the opening tone of the piece as a congratulatory speech of achievements and encourages the viewers to listen on.…

In recent times, it has become increasing clear that economic development and population growth are resulting in expeditious changes in natural ecosystems, globally, and particularly on the self-sufficient ecosystems of Hastings Point. In acknowledgment of this, the United Nations’ Kofi Annan presented a report: “We the Peoples: The Role of the United Nations in the 21st Century.” (2000) Annan called for Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in order to establish the consequences of change in ecosystems for the well-being of humans, and to specify the importance of conservation actions needed to enhance the sustainable use of services supporting various aspects of human life (2000) (Alberti, 2005). Findings from the report and recent studies situated…

Biodiversity means the variety of life forms/organisms in an ecosystem, biome or entire planet. Globally, biodiversity is not evenly distributed. It generally increases from the poles towards the equator as around 50% of the world’s plants and animals live in tropical rainforests. This is because of the proximity to the equator causing a warmer, more moist, stable climate which means plants grow better and can support more species higher up in the food chain. Standard of living is the level of wealth, goods and services, which are available to a person or ground within a population. For development and to improve people’s standard of living, it’s often necessary to make use of the world’s biodiversity. However, it has become clear that we must preserve the current level of biodiversity so that we can maintain the carbon sink that rainforests provide and so that we can continue researching and finding developments in certain medicines that rainforests can provide.…
They argue that by planting these modified crops, food supply can increase and there would be more farming opportunities. However, genetically modified crops will have the opposite effect. Many third world nations consist of communities that are dependent on sustainable agricultural practices. Subsequently, “when genetically modified crops are introduced into the area, traditional farming land is displaced, food production of other essential crops declines, widespread flooding and forest clearing destroys land, and the introduction of toxic weed killers threatens plant biodiversity” (Phelps 86). In fact, plant biodiversity is necessary to ensure the survival of crops. Instead of curing world hunger, genetically engineered crops will only encourage the…
Throughout this essay I will be defending the idea that we cannot escape our biological heritage through the argument from Evolutionary Psychology. I will also present and critique conflicting ideas of our human nature through the idea Standard Social Science Model (SSSM). To begin this paper I will firstly break down what is meant by the question ‘can we escape our biological heritage?’ as well as mention the importance of the answer to this question and explain what is meant by the ‘Theory of Human Nature’.…
Proponents and opponents of biotechnology being a distraction is argued by Frances Moore Lappe. Multiple argumentative points are presented by Lappe on what’s the right issue to focus on. The first point Lappe argues is the amount of food we have. Lappe goes on to say, “They were telling us that we had reached the Earth’s limits to feed ourselves, but in fact there was more than enough food for us all” (249). In other words, “they” were telling us that there is less food to eat than Lappe believes we have. It is more or less true that hunger is the result of economic givens that we’ve created. The second point Lappe made is about getting what we put out. Lappe’s point was made was she says, “Thirty years ago, one-third of the world’s grain…

Why conserve biodiversity? The values of biodiversity can be classified as either direct values or indirect values (see pp.119-120 in the IB ESS Course Companion):…
An ecosystem is a community of plants, animals, and microorganisms that live, feed, reproduce, and interact in the same environment. An ecosystem service is the service people obtain from the natural environment.…
The world’s habitats and ecosystem have been damaged by human activity and organic resource consumption, which has caused a great loss of biodiversity. If strong efforts are not made to restore and sustain conditions, our ecosystem will be destine for collapse. It is imperative that we use TEK (traditional ecological knowledge) as a source of environmental ethics to conserve the earth’s habitats and restore our ecosystem…

It seems that in today’s time, the discussion of biodiversity and what it means is being discussed frequently. There are those who feel that biodiversity is something that will possibly take care of itself. Then there are those who realize that the Earth is changing and there are some things that need to be done to ensure that the Earth is preserved. This is going to require policymakers and Scientists coming to an understanding. It will require addressing the social and economical perspectives of biodiversity. There will be some things addressed that government currently has in place but seem to work against each other. However, there are some recommendations that may help educate citizens and give some incentive for being more responsible in regard to biodiversity.…
