He did not start to resist the British until the protest of the Townshend acts in 1767 though. The letters he wrote during this time show that he was against the colonies declaring independence but eventually believed that it was a fundamental violation by the crown of the rights of the people. Washington told the House of Burgesses that they should boycott British goods until the acts were repealed. He was selected as a delegate in 1775. When Washington became general the army had many defeats. But in March of 1776 they finally had victory. They had placed military above Boston forcing the British to retreat. On Christmas night in 1776 Washington and his military crossed the Delaware River and surprised the British by attacking them forcing their surrender and finally won independence.
On April 30, 1789, Washington became president. He served for two terms. He was the only president that got everyone’s votes. When Washington retired he enjoyed less than three years of retirement before he died. He died of strep throat. His death date was December 14, 1799.
