The purpose of this report is to evaluate my performance, of my chosen serve the overhand serve, using biomechanical principles. As stated by Amezdroz et al, (2004) "Biomechanics is the study of how living things move, and the efficiency of movement, in particular. Biomechanics is used to" Provide valid reasons for observed effects diagnose problems with technique and justify changes in technique.”

Throughout this term I have taken photos of my progress within the Overhand serve, I will be showing you in detail my strengths and weaknesses when applying the serve I will be Correcting errors and justifying my analysis using biomechanical principles.

The accurate technique of the over hand serve. To start off the serve you need to make sure you have volleyball, a court and opponents. When getting ready to serve Set yourself up with your feet, hips and shoulders facing the direction you want the ball to go. The less movement you have while performing this serve the better.
For a right handed person the left foot is slightly forward, both knees are slightly flexed, with your body weight equally distributed, hold the ball in your non dominate hand at chest level, palm up, it is important to keep your elbow Loose with a slight bend, Position your serving arm so your elbow and hand are just above your ear, keep your hand open and your wrist locked. The toss is the most Important part of this serve, toss the ball 12 to 18 inches above your head in front of your serving shoulder, this keeps your serving motion simple, so you can reach high and hit the ball with a powerful swing, contact the ball with the heel of your hand, keeping your hand opened and flat, your wrist should be locked your arm fully extended, step forward

As you can see in this figure, the Girl has got her feet, hips and shoulders facing the way she wants the ball to go, her body is also equally distributed, both of her knees are slightly bend also

    The bottom tip of the ball should be aligned directly under your chin. You should place your dominant hand on the laces of the ball, similar to how a quarterback grips the football. The offhand is the guide hand and is placed on the middle of the ball opposite the dominant hand. The middle finger should be aligned parallel to the seam of the ball, pressing the palm into the ball and forcing it into the power hand.     Though the evaluation of the video footage which was taken to show my personal performance in the volley ball spike, it clearly shows the major weakness in my technique compared to the right technique.     The action all starts in the torso of the body, the abdomen area. The torso will mostly be neutral during the activity used mostly for static strength. You will experience some flexion within the rectus abdominis and the external oblique. If you rock back to gain momentum for the throw you will feel a greater amount of flexion in these areas. Your shoulders and back will then begin firing to create the force to throw the ball. Your latissimus dorsi will contact along with your deltoid and trapezius. This will create the lateral abduction of the shoulder. Another muscle you might think of as working here is the pectoralis major. This muscle has a lot to do with pussing things away from your body. Next your elbows will want to go from flexion to extension. This will happen in a very fast snapping motion where the triceps brachii flex and the biceps brachii now extend. As you throw the ball your wrist will naturally go from radial deviation to ulnar deviation, your hand will go from pronation to supination and you hands will also go from small flexion the large flexion. To perform these actions most all the muscles in the forearm, wrist, and hand perform some kind of flexion. If I write all this down we will be here all day. A fundamental mechanical structure is founds in all tennis strokes.11 The backswing provides the distance.     During the course of the preparation phase my weight is initially shifted from the front foot to the rear foot. Concurrently the left arm tosses the ball, consistency is imperative in the motion to the performance of the serve. It is important for a consistent toss, to have the left arm extended throughout the toss looking across from me somewhat poor mechanics. My elbow slightly flexed and extends the arm, rotating it from the shoulder, across my body from my outside hip. The left arm carries up to a fully extended position and aids concentration on the ball. This action occurs in order to counter the action of the racquet arm, which is moving to the rear of the body. The action of the non-racquet and racquet arm is an example of Newton’s third law, which states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The action of the left arm balances that of the right arm so that the racquet arm does not initiate unwanted angular momentum. As the action of the arms and torso occur the weight is shifted from the rear leg back to the front leg and the knees are bent in order to store potential energy. Notice the degree to which I bends my knees in above pictures, this enables my to generate more thrust against the ground therefore generating a more swing. This concept is known as ground reaction force. As I begin to develop consistency in my serve and begin increasing its power, I will have to start bending my knees more in order to store up more potential energy in an attempt to produce a more powerful serves. My hips shift forward, also as a result of Newton’s third law. The action of the arms and torso to the rear is equal and opposite to the hips shifting forward. The body therefore maintains balance and allows the body to flex further backward, storing more strain energy and increasing impulse.
