Since the existence of humans, we have been prone to disease and illness. As the search of treatments for enduring diseases is growing faster than ever before, I find it exciting that through the knowledge we gain from research we can build a greater understanding of how the human body functions and develop treatments and initiatives that will improve the health of people all over the world. With this being said, I have come to the conclusion that my career must involve research as a major component in conjunction with patient care.
Biomedical Science appeals to me as it is a collaboration of learning and practical work, both of which I hugely enjoy. Throughout my current course, I have thoroughly enjoyed studying cell biology, genetics and disease and infection. I found great interest in cell biology and find it captivating how the smallest component of the human body is also the most important. Studying disease and infection has given me a real insight into how the human body responds to abnormality and defends itself against pathogens. A particular study which has …show more content…
interested me is CAR T-Cell therapy. The promising technique of removing T-Cells from the blood and altering them to contain specific substances to attack leukaemia cells is a perfect example of how research carried out by Biomedical Scientist is vital in the aid of curing disease.
Alongside my studies, I have worked as a support worker for adults with learning disabilities.
The transferable skills I learnt whilst working are completely invaluable and will stay with me for life. During this period of work, I learnt how to speak Makaton; a communication aid used by adults with learning disabilities who have impaired hearing. In addition to this, I have attended a CPR training course in college which provided me with one of the most essential necessities; saving a life. Working and studying has allowed me to see first-hand the strength of communication between health professionals and has allowed me to develop key listening and observing
skills.
During my time at college, I was elected unanimously as Student Representative which reflects my leadership skills. This experience also helped to improve my teamwork skills and motivational skills. As for hobbies, I enjoy reading and researching various subjects on the internet. I regularly read new researches and findings that are on the news or magazines such as ‘’New Scientist’’ to increase my knowledge of today’s biological world and medical biology.
It is my belief that science is an equipoise between the facts developed from what we have already discovered and the hypotheses created from what we are yet to find. Pursuing a career in Biomedical Science will allow me to be a part of these many life-changing discoveries and provide me with the best opportunity to cultivate my natural interest and ability in science.
