BLM was born online after the not-guilty verdict for George Zimmerman, in the killing of Trayvon Martin, who was a 17-year old African American high school student who was fatally shot. BLM was to be followed later by the deaths of Michael Brown, an 18-year old black man who was fatally shot by a Ferguson police officer after robbing a store, and Eric Garner, who died after a NYC police officer put him in a chokehold while arresting him (CBS 2). These three events received a large amount of attention in the U.S and elsewhere, attracting protesters from outside the region. Even Beyonce has introduced this movement into her own music. Beyonce’s most recent album “Lemonade” featured the mothers of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and Eric Garner, holding up pictures of their sons. Her song “Formation” celebrates the Southern black culture and features a line of policemen holding up their hands while a hooded black boy dances in front of them. The video also shows a shot of graffiti on a wall reading “stop shooting us”. BLM has even sparked other groups to form. “All Lives Matter” rose up as a response to the Black Lives Matter movement. ALM has been criticised as a “racial dismissal, ignoring, and denial”. Brittany Packnett, a member of the President’s Task Force on 21st century policing, says “What it is saying though is an acknowledgement of the fact that black lives, brown lives, that people of color in particular, are the ones suffering disproportionately from issues of police brutality, police violence and discrimination in the criminal justice system” (CBS
