According to the Huffpost Crime “Chokeholds have been banned from New York City Police department since 1993” (Scheller, Diehm). Despite chokeholds being banned from New York City there are still countless complaints against police officers using chokeholds. The summer of 2014 an African - American father of six, Eric Garner was placed in a chokehold by a New York City police officer after they reportedly confronted him for selling single cigarettes known as 'loosies'. A brutal video of the incident shows approximately 4 officer pulling Garner to the ground while one officer has Garner in a choke hold trying to arrest him. Garner repeatedly told the officers “I CAN’T BREATHE”. The officers used excessive force and they failed to take Garner's own plead serious. It is clearly evident that the officer is responsible for the death of Eric Garner however, it was reported as a homicide. If something is illegal or banned and someone does it they should suffer the consequences. For instance, if weed is illegal in NYC and you are smoking weed you should suffer consequences. Whether a person believes police brutality is a serious problem or not it needs to stop. Cop Crisis stated that every 8 hours an officer is shooting a citizen. In other words approximately 3 people are killed each day by officers. Which does not include the number of assaults that are unreported and the people who survived the excessive force. The first step to lowering the amount of abuse is longer training for officers and setting a standard for the amount of abuse officers should use. This abuse of force tends to not only violate state and federal laws but also people's constitutional rights. Moreover, Officers are doing unethical things and they're not suffering any consequences which is leading officers to do more abuse because they think they can get away with
