Bleach And Osmosis
Introduction
In this experiment, I measured the impact of two different topical chemicals on growing bacteria over the course of a week. Bleach, water, hand sanitizer and hand soap were all variables used to observe the effects of the bacteria swabbed from my palm and fingers. Bleach has been the go to product for killing germs and it is because of the similar effects it has with high temperature on the proteins in bacteria. I hypothesized that bleach would be the most efficient way for killing the bacteria over hand sanitizer and hand soap.
Methods
I planned my experiment to test the effects of topical chemicals on bacteria living on my hands. In doing this experiment I used hand soap and hand sanitizer on the living bacteria. I followed the procedure for setting up the bacteria culture as listed in the lab manual. I swabbed the bacteria sample from my palm, fingers and finger tips. In addition to the two experimental variables, I had two separate control quadrants, one containing water and the other containing bleach. After completing the bacteria culture, each quadrant was labeled and left untouched over the course of a week. During this time, I observed and took note of the growth in each quadrant every day.

The bacteria in the water quadrant experienced little growth, while the bacteria in the hand soap quadrant grew in a circular form, smooth margin, flat elevation, with no zone of inhibition. The quadrant containing hand sanitizer also grew in a circular form, smooth margin, convex elevation with a 1 inch zone of inhibition and was some form of fungi. The quadrant containing bleach experienced no growth. The data tells me that hand soap and hand sanitizer are not nearly as effective at killing bacteria as hand sanitizer and bleach. More so, it was surprising to see how inefficient hand soap was at killing the bacteria taken from my

Procedure: Obtained a small Styrofoam cooler placed two small light bulbs in side and observed temperature over 24 hours to ensure temperature could be maintained between 98-100 degrees. Using a 10% bleach solution I then cleaned my work area. Transferring one capsule of L. acidopholis into a tube of MRS broth using the aseptic transfer technique then marked a line on test tube to record sediment. Labeled tube of nutrient broth S. epidermidis, then using a sterile swab obtained sample of bacteria from skin then transferred using the aseptic transfer technique into the sterile media. Incubated both specimens for 48 hours observed and recording results of growth at 24 and 48 hours. After observing final growth pattern at 48 hours prepared both wet mount and direct stain slide for each of the cultures. Viewed under microscope using both the 40X and 100X oil immersion lens. A Petri plate containing nutrient agar was used in the experiment. A sharpie was used to section off four quadrants of the dish for the different bacteria. Cotton swabs were used to sample different areas of the building. Cotton swabs used by me and my lab partner were used to test areas from the hallway water fountain, vending machine, hallway floor, and the door handle to enter the classroom. Once done with this process, the cotton swabs were swiped on the four different quadrants of the Petri plate, covered and sealed, and set aside for a week to let the bacteria grow on the agar.…

The purpose of my experiment is to find and compare the efficiency of Proactive™ and Clearasil™ acne products on certain bacteria. For myself, Clearasil™ works better than Proactive™ does when exposed to my pores, which are infested with bacteria. However, Proactive™ is widely known and has a large amount of advertisements on television, featuring celebrities who claim the acne treatment's amazing end products. The question is, which antimicrobial treatment, Proactive™ or Clearasil™, will kill more bacteria and have a larger inhibition zone when exposed to bacteria? My hypothesis is, if I expose Clearasil™ to Escherchia Coli and Streptococcus Epidermis, then it will kill more bacteria and have a larger inhibition zone, than Proactive™ will.…

The control group had no effect on killing S. aureus, but the treatment groups did have an effect on killing S. aureus. The hand soap mean zone of clearing was 11.21mm and the alcohol mean zone of clearing was 13.21mm. The null hypothesis that neither hand soap nor alcohol gel is effective in killing S. aureus more than the control group is rejected. The alternate hypothesis that hand soap versus the control group is more effective killing S. aureus is accepted. The alternate hypothesis that alcohol gel versus the control group is more effective in killing S. aureus is accepted. The alternate hypothesis that alcohol gel is more effective than the hand soap in killing S. aureus is rejected. The data suggests hand soap is not as effective as alcohol gel; however, statistically, the data does not support that alcohol gel is a more effective treatment because the error bars…

Hand hygiene has been the foundation of preventing nosocomial infections throughout the hospital. It has been taught for several generations that hand hygiene is effectively accomplish through the use of handwashing with soap and water. Unfortunately, studies have shown that handwashing practices have fallen out, which have led to a noticeably low compliance rate with health care workers. This in turn has led to an increase of nosocomial infections, and has had a negative impact on improving the health of patients who rely on physicians, nurses and other ancillary staff who have direct contact with them. Fortunately, an introduction of a new product has been able to change the statistical data with low compliance rate for hand hygiene. Some facilities have introduced the use of alcohol-based hand rubs as an alternative to the conventional handwashing techniques to help decrease the rate of nosocomial infections. There are several factors that indicate a better efficacy rate with using hand rubs versus handwashing. Studies have shown that health care workers have listed barriers and constraints that prevent them from practicing proper hand hygiene; therefore, leading to a low compliance rate. The effect of this low compliance rate leads to longer hospital stays, the development of resistant bacterial infections, and consequently a higher mortality rate among the patients. Research suggests that using alcohol based hand-rubbing solution is more effective in preventing nosocomial infection versus standard hand washing with antiseptic soap because healthcare staff are more compliant with using an alcohol based rubbing solution, consumes less time than standard hand washing practices, and it is readily available throughout the hospitals.…

The interventions and practice considered as a result of evidence- based practice, by the National Guideline Clearinghouses for hand hygiene recommendation in prevention and control of healthcare associated infections in Massachusetts are: Hand washing and hand antisepsis using a non-antimicrobial and water, antimicrobial soap and water, and alcohol based-hand rub, receiving input from heath care workers regarding the products that are being used, providing healthcare workers with skin care products, educating the healthcare workers and observing their practices, and having administrative support. These are similar to my facility’s policies, except that they do not recommend the use of non-antimicrobial soap.…

As a nurse, our top priority is to ensure the safety of our patients. And one way to ensure the safety of our patients is to prevent the patient from contracting an infection through the process of hand hygiene (Potter, Perry, Stockert, & Hall, 2017, p.458). Therefore, to prevent and remove any microorganisms from being passed on to our patients, nurses and staff must understand that "Hand hygiene is not an option." (Perry, Potter, & Elkin, 2016, p. 76). Hand hygiene includes four techniques, including handwashing, antiseptic handwash, antiseptic hand rub, and surgical hand antisepsis (Perry, Potter, & Elkin, 2016, p. 76).…
