[Attention Getter]How many of you know what blood pressure is? It is the pressure exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries. How many of you know on how high or low blood pressure really is? I mean most of us are nervous giving a speech in front of some strangers so I’m going to guess a little high. Not many people do. [Psychological Orientation] Just like my dad he is a bit over weight man, but he felt great, except for occasionally dizziness which he finds annoying. That day he was due for a medical checkup and he goes to see his doctor. As part of the routine examination, the doctor took my dad’s blood pressure. He ended up telling him that he had mild hypertension . . . even a little hypertension could become dangerous. According to the online journals and articles written, hypertension contributes directly or indirectly to about one million deaths per year. It affects over 35 million people, approximately one out of every four or five American adults. To keep a check on an individual's blood pressure, there is a simple, painless, inexpensive test that only takes about30 seconds. As a student who has seen the doctor do this procedure hundreds of times I asked to see and be taught this procedure. Blood pressure can be measured by doing three important steps. [Logical Orientation] Today I would like to demonstrate these three steps: gathering the materials, following a specific procedure, and reading blood pressure scale.
