I am a student nurse and has completed a simulated interview for the first assessment in the BNIR501 paper. My scenario was, Mrs Jo Brown was discharged last week but has been readmitted into hospital for further testing. Mrs Brown was waiting for the doctor to see her to discuss why she had been readmitted and what tests were to be done. Mrs Brown was feeling anxious about her readmission, specifically the length of her admission and was very concerned about her job security.
So What
I introduced myself at the start of the interview and asked if was okay for me to sit down. I then asked the patient what they preferred to be called. At the start of the interview I felt I used an open-ended statement, “So, I have heard that you’ve been …show more content…
Throughout the interview, I used reflecting feelings, such as “It’s frustrating trying to sort things out with no idea of what is happening,” to show that I was listening and encouraged the patient to confirm how she was feeling. The reflection of emotion is useful because it conveys the nurse’s recognition of feelings as well as confirming the existence of emotions (Stein-Parbury, 2014, p. 168-169). I also used paraphrasing “It’s very concerning not knowing,” to further demonstrate I was listening and to encourage the patient to further expand on her thoughts and feelings. Stein-Parbury (2014, p. 164-165) states that paraphrasing is the backbone to understanding as it is through paraphrasing that a nurse shares their understanding of what patients have expressed. Minimal encouragement was used subconsciously throughout my interview, this includes nodding, “mm,” “mhmm” and “yea” to encourage the patient to continue talking and to assure her that I am following what she was saying. Stein-Parbury (2014, p. 182-183) states that these signals acknowledge the patients verbalisation and encourage further elaboration without specific direction from the nurse. At
