First, even though Pearl harbor is remembered for being bombed it is known for much more back then and today. Today, Pearl Harbor serves as the headquarters of the U.S Pacific Fleet (“Naval Station Pearl Harbor”). Also, just a little ways from Pearl Harbor ( in Wahiawa, Hawaii) they have the biggest Naval computer and telecommunications center which serves as the biggest station in the world (“Naval Station Pearl Harbor”). Second, the tragedy of the attack on Pearl Harbor shocked the world and many unfortunate sacrifices were made.
It began at 7:02 when radar operators detected swarms of aircrafts, but was told not to sound the alarm for no concern was what they said the situation was (“Pearl Harbor Bombed”). Next, around 7:55 AM about 360 Japanese planes were spotted around the island of Oahu, as island of Hawaii (“ Pearl Harbor Bombed”). Then, During the attack, over three destroyers, five battleships, and over 200 aircrafts were destroyed by Japanese forces (“ Pearl Harbor Bombed”). After the attack was completed over 3,700 americans had lost their lives to just around 60 of Japanese people (“Pearl Harbor | HistoryNet”). Pearl Harbor will always be remembered in our hearts and symbolize the day the world was
silenced.
Finally, Pearl Harbor went on to spark a terrible event that went further than Pearl Harbor; World War II. The next day, after Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt gave a short but very powerful speech stating “ Yesterday, December 7, 1941- a date which will live in infamy-the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan,” (“Pearl Harbor Bombed." History.com. A&E Television Networks, n.d. Web. 04 Nov. 2016.”). Next, congress approved a letter from the president that said we were set and ready for war (“Pearl Harbor Bombed”). The votes from congress were almost unanimous as the senate voted 82-0 and the house representatives voted 388-1 (“Pearl Harbor Bombed”). Finally, after hearing us declare war against Japan, Germany and Italy declared war with Japan against us on December 11, 1941, four days after Pearl Harbor (“Attack on Pearl Harbor”). World War II was a great battle that had forced our nation to become involved because of this attack on Pearl Harbor.
The people who lost someone to Pearl Harbor will never forget about their terrible sacrifice. Though many of us remember Pearl Harbor for just being bombed it’s history and service today shows us more of what great things it was and still are. Pearl harbor was a terrible price to that many had to pay and that it silenced us for a long time. This event didn’t happen for no reason as this event went on to spark one of the worst events in history;WWII. Pearl Harbor was no ordinary event as it came with a lot of grieving faces and a nation that would never be the same.
