In the novel Cheaper By the Dozen written by Frank Jr Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey is a memoir about their family's style of living. It talks about how the family worked together as a group helping each other out. It also mentions that the family has a family council in which people do different things like for example a few people are supposed to buy things for the family. If shows that a family should be for each other in everything, for example, in the movie and the novel the father sacrificed his own health for his family. The parents are also very protective of their kids, especially the father because when new trends start coming around the parents will not let the join in on them.
In the movie some
things they touch upon is dad’s humour and how he likes playing tricks on the family, but the movie did not show that much of his jokes. It also talks about how much dad is always doing motion study project with the kids to help his business but in the movie it doesn’t show that much motion study. Toward the middle of the novel, it tells us more about the mother and her side of the family while her and the kids are in California but in in the film it didn’t show us that information. When the father calls an assembly call the order goes from Anne, Ernestine, Martha, Mary, Frank, Bill, Lillian, Fred, Dan, John, Bob, Jane but in the movie the order gets a little messed up. In addition to that The kids hair color is not the exact same like in the novel.
Some things that the film and the book had in common was that Anne wants to change her appearance, but her dad does not want her to change. Once she finally gets under her parent's skin they also let Ernestine bob their hair along with doing things like wearing different types of clothes. The father also dies from heart complications while on the way to give his speeches. After the news about their father, mother goes to give the speeches because she knew doing that would what he would want her to do. They also both include the twelve children, six girls and six boys.
In conclusion family should always help each other out. By helping each other out you can do this much more efficiently like how the Gilbreths had a family council to make sure everyone knows what's happening and how they are handling the situation. Also finding tactics to help make things go faster for people who live in a large family like the Gilbreths is helpful because then you can spend more time with your parents and siblings other that spending a long time doing something like taking a bath. So being efficient can help in many was in in this novel, it helped bring the family together and spend more time doing other things like studying for school or helping the father with motion study. Lastly, the movie and novel Cheaper By the Dozen that we should make sacrifices for our family to spend more time with them because they are the only ones who truly get us the best.
