The Outsiders Book Report

I chose the quote,"You cannot open a book without learning something" by the Irish proverb because I can relate it to my favorite book,"The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton which taught me lots of stuff that I did not know about. The book is about a 14 year old named Ponyboy and his two brothers Darry who is 16 and Sodapop who is 20 years old. Darry is in charge of them due to both of his parents dying in a car accident. They are all greasers in a gang and often watch over Johnny ,who is another greaser, because his alcoholic parents abuse him. They also have a gang rivalry with the Socs who are rich and pick on the poor.
The quote,”You cannot open a book without learning something” by the Irish proverb because the book taught me a lot about mostly everything from the life of a greaser. I learned that the Socs and greasers were rivals because greasers were lower class than the socs. One example is when Ponyboy is walking home alone and a car full with 3 Socs stop and beats Ponyboy up and cut him, but then out of nowhere come Darry and Sodapop to defend him. This demonstrates how strong the rivalry between the two gangs was and how cruel they were. Before reading the book I only knew that greasers were usually from the east side and lower class. One example is when the book states,” We're poorer than the Socs and the middle class. I reckon we're wilder, too. Not like the Socs, who jump greasers…” This quote shows how the Socs jumped or beat up greasers for nothing. I also learned that the lives of greasers were rough. For example in the book it says,”"Need a haircut, greaser?" The medium-sized blond pulled a knife out of his back pocket and flipped the blade open.” This happened when Ponyboy was peacefully walking down the street. This demonstrates how greasers were always going through bullying for no
