body of knowledge, but interestingly as the way of thinking which help us to understand the world and how we perceive it. Skeptical thinking allows us to get true premises which will help us come up with the collect logic. One of the major themes in the book is the dragon in my garage. It is interesting how Sagan asked a visitor to find the dragon in his garage. This story about a fire breathing dragon which Sagan asks the visitor to find proves that skeptical thinking is required in every interaction. Take the example of the activities the visitor did to trace the invisible dragon, spreading the flour on the floor so that the dragons’ footprint top track the footprint with no results. Although that was a good idea, according to Sagan, again the visitor suggested they should use they use the camera because the Sagan said the dragons floats in the air. Then Sagan continues with the argument by saying that the dragon fires are no heat and it cannot be seen. The visitor continued to guess while Sagan continued to prove all the guesses wrong showing how it is difficult to prove the existence of the dragon. Sagan uses the scenario to show that there is no difference between the invisible and heatless fire dragon and the no dragon at all.
The next theme is the misuse of science as seen by a case where the Teller made the hydrogen bomb. I believe that that the application of science should be to benefit the people and nothing to harm, unlike used by the teller to influence politics back in the days. Finally, the other theme which is evident is the story is the is the baloney detection key when developing this theme Sagan used the skeptical thinking to distinguish between the reasoned argument and the fraudulent claims. In this theme, Sagan advocates for the use of the independent tools to help develop the two senses in different departing activities. Sagan had a different view of science, he did not want people to know or understand the substance of science, he was a concern with the idea that people actually could use the knowledge to challenge the tested theories. In the book, the theme of superstition come up as the people were reluctant to embrace the science which was brought to the country centuries ago but as that believed in their traditions. Superstition was an order of the day before the Greek knowledge was accepted.
On stress and health psychology is where I found interesting and informative in this entire course.
The stress is broadly divided into two the positive stress and the distress. There is stress out of a positive change in our life and the distress as a result of negative changes in our life. The causes of stress in the daily life are exactly the ones discussed in the course materials. It could because of the frustration with the job market like losing a job or loss of the loved ones among other factors. Some of the diseases we suffer from today are caused by the stress name it gastric ulcers, cancer and the cardiovascular disorders. As that is not enough stress management is important to the depressed, as there are some of the different ways to deal with stress as explained in the text which include the exercise which helps the individual relieved the stress. Involvement in the social activity is another method to avoid stress; behavior changes, the stressor control among another form which individuals use to control stress is applicable and contained in the course …show more content…
material.
Consciousness is another major topic which we apply in our daily activities.
It requires that animals have different average sleeping hours sleep hours in which the human being is a maximum of eight hours. Sleep affects our moods and the productivity in each given day. Enough sleep is associated with moods a person will have the following day, the less number of hours slept will lead to one experiencing general fatigue and high chances of getting angry. On the productivity, the same case will happen sleep deprivation will lead to poor academic performance and lower cognitive ability.
On another most applicable area is learning, different theories are discussed are explained how classical conditions can be applied in a different field for example, in politics where the politicians will always use the condition response in favor and against their opponents. Another very important subject which I hope to apply is the punishment. Different forms of punishment should be given to children depending on the wrong which they have committed. When raising children, it will help the parent know when to use the positive reinforcement and when to negative
punishment.
The lesson on memory and forgetting are also important in our life today. To the student, we need to differentiate what to store in the short term memory and what to store in the long-term memory. Forgetting is healthy as it will help us learn new things. I believe this knowledge will help anyone who is in school to understand how the brain works and how the information is stored. There are different methods which are used to improve memory which I found useful in the like the use of the acronym. Finally, the idea, of critical thinking and problem-solving skills are applicable everywhere today. We need to solve the problem in our workplace, we need to make a decision which should be done in the best way possible. It is some of the lifetime skill which an individual cannot dare to lose or not to have
