school in 1969 where he majored in English. After a few undecided years and several odd end jobs, he continued his education at Vanderbilt University where he received his masters. He was the CEO of an advertising agency (J. Walter Thompson) were he coined the slogan “Toys R Us Kid” until 1996. He decided to pursue his writing career fulltime after the success of his novel “Along Came a Spider”. Since then, Patterson has never looked back and has had a very successful career as a novelist touring all over the world for book signings. Patterson now leaves in Florida with his wife Susan and son Jack.
“The Big Bad Wolf” is the ninth book in the Alex Cross series. It a fictional suspense thriller surrounding Dr. Cross’s first major cases as an FBI Agent. The case involves a white slave prostitution ring run by a man calling himself ‘The Wolf’, a criminal mastermind who takes special orders from wealthy clients and has his two hired guns (one male and one female) abduct someone who best fits the description. The kidnapped victims are delivered to the paying clients never to be heard from again. The case is turned over to the FBI when the wife of a federal judge (Elizabeth Connelly) is kidnapped from a shopping mall in Atlanta, GA. The case is assigned to Dr. Cross while he is still completing his FBI orientation classes. He must focus on finding the victims while dealing with issues at work and at home. The danger surrounding the case puts his family in the line of fire as The Wolf proves to be a worthy opponent.
Dr. Alex Cross is a former Washington, DC detective with a Doctorate in Psychology and father of three children. He and his children currently leave with Nana (Alex’s mother). While he may be qualified for his new job as an FBI Agent, he was not welcomed by his new colleagues for several reasons. While the process to become an agent is a long and lengthy one; Dr. Cross was offered the job without applying by the Deputy Director and has been allowed to bypass many security checks. He has also been allowed to live the facility daily after classes to go home and be with his children and return the next morning (this was not normal). He is also considered to be a superstar ‘know it all’ in DC who has worked several high profile cases. He has been pivotal in the successful capture of several kidnappers and retrieved the victims alive. It is for this specific reason Dr. Cross was chosen to join this case involving the missing Elizabeth Connelly.
The Wolf is a wealthy ex KGB and former member of a Russian Mafia organization.
He is known for being ruthless as well as his intense torture and specialized methods of killing. He has become a master criminal in the United States and Europe since leaving Russia. Although the Wolf is famous for his crimes; one has ever seen him (knowing that he is The Wolf). The clients who visit The Wolf’s Den online have very specific request when it comes to their choices. One client was a fan of Claudia Schaeffer and saw a woman whom resembled her which led to her being kidnapped by The Wolf’s employees. Another chose a blue eyed, blond hair younger male as his slave. The novel gives you a glimpse into the lives of the victims after being kidnapped. While some are raped, tortured, and locked away; others are served breakfast and treated as a captured royal by his/her captives. The Wolf along with the case seems to evade Dr. Cross until a 14 year old girl is kidnapped and escapes which is outside of the normal pattern of victims. The Wolf has made his first mistake and the FBI is hot on his trial or so it seems. As Dr. Cross starts to identify and locate buyers and victims, he begins to close in on the Wolf. It may seem like he’s closer to capturing The Wolf, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Throughout the novel there were many twists and turns involving the suspects and kidnapping victims. As the suspect list grows and additional information regarding the slave ring is revealed, Dr. Cross discovers that the identity of one of the Wolf’s employees is someone he knows very well. The Wolf has hired guns working side by side with Dr. Cross. Although Dr. Cross catches up to the Wolf in the end, he manages to evade
capture.
As with all James Patterson novels, after reading this book I am eager to read the next installment of this series. I had chills and trimmers like I was in a movie theater watching an Action/Horror movie while reading this novel. I feel this novel would make a great movie as The Wolf is an incredible foe for Dr. Cross. With each scene described sometimes in gored details, I could imagine Morgan Freeman displaying his great acting skills again as Dr. Cross. I look forward to reading the 10th addition of the series.
