High school can also be the area where students will decide they do not like reading, making it the downfall of their reading. If teachers want to stop this from happening, reading more mature books is a great solution. In this case, teachers should be able to teach questionable books because students learn about these subjects, either way, these subjects are an important part of life, and these subjects will help advance reading skills. Firstly, students should be taught uncomfortable subjects because these subjects will be taught either way. When students reach college, they will, no doubt, learn about uncomfortable subjects like sex, language, and violence. Throughout life, people will come across uncomfortable subjects like different sexualities, violence, and profanity every day. If teachers go ahead and teach these subjects, it not only makes it better on the students but the concerned parent who is not sure if or how their child will make it in the world. This brings me to another point. If students were to go ahead and learn these things, they will know how to handle these tricky situations. If we don’t know how to act towards something or someone, we will most likely try to get away rather than solve, or just stare the situation in the face. If we know even the tiniest fact about the subject, then we will at least know something out encountered. Therefore, questionable books are an important part of life because studies show 55.8% of people will encounter these types of a matter before they are even 16. Again, if teachers go ahead and teach these things, it will help

The school board is no longer certain fiction books and novels have a place in today’s curriculum. I disagree with this argument due to the following reasons. Oscar wilde once said ‘’ Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” This quote meaning when life imitates art, reality reflects what had previously been expressed in art (or literature, drama, etc). In many cases that is not always a good thing. For example, in the book “Crank” written by Ellen Hopkins; the innocent, adolescent main character Kristina Gorge struggles of drug abuse.…

To Kill a Mockingbird, The Catcher in the Rye, and The Scarlet Letter are classic novels that demonstrate sex, profanity, and racism, but what sets these books apart from the rest is the classy way they introduce ideas of sin. Teens of the 21st century are indulging more and more into inappropriate novels. Students are going to school where they are commanded to read books with mindful tactics, sexual content, and vulgar language. We need to help restore youths moral values, and to achieve this we should prohibit certain books from being read and reintroduce the classics alongside new books presenting strong values. Banning books is valid because we may be using books to enhance our children's knowledge, however, books often contain content…

Sometimes with the eating disorders, kids can often times act upon that because they think it’s cool, when they really don’t have the right idea about the subject (Library). Books with sexual encounters can cause inappropriate images to young readers that may not be able to handle (Library). For me personally, books should not be banned because it is basically censoring someone else's art. Writers or authors have the right to publish whatever they want. They are just books. People should not get all worked up over a piece of literature. Especially schools. Schools across the country in different time periods banned the novel for the reasons being that it is too vulgar, sexual, and violent for kids to read. (“Banned Book: The Catcher in the Rye”)…

Did you ever think that books that contain sex, obscene language, and immoral subjects could make a good book? The Catcher in the Rye is a prime example. The book has been on the banned reading list since the days following its publishing. The book was said to be “immoral and inappropriate that in 1960, a teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was fired for assigning the book to an eleventh-grade English class.” (“Banned Book: The Catcher”) The Catcher in the Rye should be read in schools because it gives a crystal clear image on how the world contains sex, violence, and motifs of lying and deception.…

Books all over America are in danger. Books, objects that allow imagination and the expansion of the mind and the world around one, are often times subject to criticism and even bannings when any one person does not like the content. Books bannings should not be done whatsoever, let alone become a semi-common practice. Of course, bannings only occur after careful consideration. Or do they? Censorship is a growing problem in America, as parents and other authority figures ban various types of books in their community when content is too “edgy” or “age inappropriate”, and these are often gone through without the book so much as being opened. However, in all reality, what might be “wrong” for one child may be just right for another. Are book…

Many of these classic stories have been banned because of sexual references, racial slurs, religious intolerance, or supposed witchcraft promotion. Although some may consider these books controversial or inappropriate, many English classes have required their students to read these books (About banned). It should be believed that even controversial books could ultimately boost, not deter, our educational wealth. Book banning should be opposed for three main reasons: education should be open to everyone, citizens should have access to the press, and, lastly, parents should monitor what their own children read and not what other children can obtain. For these reasons, I conclude that the government should play no role in what books any age group can obtain.…

The book To Kill a Mockingbird and other controversial books should not be taken out of public school curriculum because, while they may have offensive language and other uncomfortable scenes in the books, the lessons within often teach students about America’s uncomfortable past and current injustices. By taking controversial books, like To Kill a Mockingbird or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, out of curriculum schools are dismissing the fact that uncomfortable issues in these books are still very prevalent in society today. When the different schools take controversial books that have to do with racism out of their curriculum, they are dismissing the fact injustices still happen today. The racism in society must be confronted. The schools…

Because there are so many reasons people challenge a book’s content, many more books are getting banned from schools. "Most frequently, books are challenged because they contain profanity or violence, sex or sex education, homosexuality, witchcraft and the occult, "secular humanism" or "new age" philosophies, portrayals of rebellious children, or "politically incorrect," racist or sexist language"(Mullaly). During this time in life, most of these topics are dealt with on a daily basis. Tons of people using drugs or trying to recover from drug use, different forms of sexuality and how the world can be both accepting and not accepting of it. People are around others with different beliefs, religious or otherwise, all the time. "But what's truly obscene is that I know a real girl in the real world who has gone through this. What's obscene is that so do you, even if you're not aware of the specifics. What's obscene is that you know kids who have gone through, and are going through, worse" (Crutcher). People see others facing difficult situations that are often similar to situations that happen in books, especially ones being banned. Sometimes a book is the most comforting thing to a person, if they find a book that perfectly represents the situation they are facing they can feel like they aren’t alone. They each have gone through different experiences and have formed to become the person they are different from any other person. Therefore, the only person who can decide what they want to read, or wat is against their own personal set of morals is themself. By banning books or censoring books, people can not choose for themselves, limiting their freedom given to them by the government. If a particular person does not approve of a topic, idea or theme in a novel, then they do not have to read it, but trying to have it banned is not allowing others to make that judgement for themselves (Harvey, Linda). Some may say that libraries or publishers are not trustworthy of protecting the youth of today from ideas that they see as “wrong’ or “immoral” (Manning, Erin). Should those readers not be allowed to decide for themselves what they believe is good or bad? For example, the way that today's teens have grown up is completely different than that of their parents or grandparents. These teens see the world differently, than the adults of the world. While it is important to learn from past mistakes, should the older members be allowed to continue to dictate what youth read and ultimately come to believe (Harvey, Linda)? A recent study has shown that adults are more likely to support censoring or banning books while most youth are against it (Rampell, Catherine). Neil Gaiman once said, “ Ideas- written ideas are special. They are the…
