How have you (or others) been toxin handlers in the workplace? What were some of the challenges you (or they) faced?
I tend to be the most levelheaded person when I am acting professional at work. Because of that, many co-workers over the years have come to me to vent. It is quite amusing thinking back about it. It has so a who’s who of stories. However, the stories are not really the amazing part about being a toxin handler at work. What is amazing is the complete openness when most coworkers begin to spill their venting to me. Some of them involve their home lives, some is about the boss, and most is about other coworkers or the job itself. Yet, none of these coworkers ever really held back what they needed to vent. I guess they felt they could trust me with all of these secrets that they have about work, coworkers, family and the boss.
Many of the challenges were not that difficult to deal with. It is easy to listen to people were genuine problem that just need someone to listen. It is even easier to keep their secrets from others who may be asking, “What did they say?” or “What boss they do not like”. However, the most difficult part of being a listener is when the person you are listening too asks for advice and ideas to coup. I often wonder what to say to certain things they
